2024 U-23 Baseball World Cup

The 2024 U-23 Baseball World Cup was the 5th edition of the U-23 Baseball World Cup . Participating were Nicaragua, South Korea, Great Britain, the Netherlands, South Africa, Japan, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Colombia, Taiwan, China and Australia. It was held in Shaoxing, Zhejiang China.

  • Nicaragua 8, South Africa 1. Axel Zapata fanned 8 in 5 innings, and Odlanyer Matamoros was 3-for-3 with 3 RBI. Corbin Greenslade drove in South Africa's only run.
  • Australia 4, Colombia 2. Ky Jackson got the win with 5 1/3 innings with 5 strikeouts, and Zakary Skinner's RBI single help Aussies to come from behind in the 5th inning.
  • Venezuela 10, Netherlands 9. Venezuela knocked in 5 runs in the first inning, but the Netherlands rally and took the lead in the 5th inning. Venezuela answered back soon, and Alexander Pena's 2-run single secured their win in the 6th inning. Darryl Collins was 2-for-2 with 3RBI for Netherlands.
  • South Korea 3, Taiwan 1. Tae-hyun Kim, Hyun-suk Choi and Jae-young Song combined to strike out 10 with only one run allowed. Chia-Hui Tseng got the loss.
  • China 5, Great Britain 3. The hosts got their historic first win thanks to Qirui Wu's game-tying RBI single in the 7th inning and Keyu Lin's clutch sacrifice fly in the 8th inning. Oliver Duthie fanned 10 with a run allowed in 6 1/3 innings but couldn't get the win, and Xiang Wang completed the game with 4 strikeouts.
  • Puerto Rico 6, Japan 1. The defending champion lost in their opener. Jorhan Laboy pitched 4 shutout innings despite allowing 5 walks to get the win, and Luis Hernandez went 2-for-3 with 2RBI.

September 7[edit]

  • South Korea 6, South Africa 1. Dae-sun Jeong was 2-for-3 with 3 RBI, and Won-pyo Hong struck out 5 in 3 shutout innings.
  • Nicaragua 2, Venezuela 1. Angel Canales got the win as he only allowed one run in 5 innings, and Godwin Bennett was 2-for-2 with a RBI.
  • Japan 2, China 0. Against expectations, China kept up close, though they lost. Kosei Nakakubo completed a one-hit shutout with 6 strikeouts, and Takanori Takahashi went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI.
  • Colombia 6, Great Britain 4. Colombia drove in 5 runs and came from behind to get their first win of the event. Kevin Gomez got the win.
  • Australia 5, Puerto Rico 4. In the first 9-inning game of the event, Australia's Chris Burke hit a walk-off sacrifice fly against Lucas Vega. John Montes was 2-for-2 with 2 RBI for Puerto Rico.
  • Netherlands 7, Taiwan 5. Dylan Farley fanned 4 in 4 innings to get the win, and Marvin Jakobus drove in 2 runs. Chun-Wei Liu collected 2 RBI for Taiwan.

September 8[edit]

  • Venezuela 10, South Africa 0. Carlos Campos, Cristian Fermin and Oswald Mori complete a 2-hit shutout, and Alexander Pena went 2-for-3 with a RBI. Josh Tribe got the loss.
  • China 4, Colombia 3. Huadancairang struck out 7 in 5 innings to get the win over Jose Garces, and Yi Zhou was 2-for-3 with a game-winning, 2-run single in the first inning.
  • Puerto Rico 8, Great Britain 3. Edrick Félix and Luis Gonzalez both drove in 2 runs, and Puerto Rico got their third straight win.
  • Japan 4, Australia 1. Takuya Yamada's 2-run double helped Japan topped Australia, and Oga Nishimura was the winning pitcher. Jo Stevens went 3-for-3 for the Aussies.
  • Nicaragua 4, Taiwan 3. Juan Gayton fanned 5 in 4 innings to get the win and eliminated Taiwan. Enmanuel Aburto was 2-for-2, and Shun-Ho Wang drove in two runs.
  • South Korea 4, Netherlands 1. Korea knocked in 3 runs in the first inning to secure a win, and Ki-ho Park struck out 5 in 3 2/3 innings.

September 9[edit]

  • Taiwan 11, South Africa 0. Taiwan finally got their first win with a one-hitter by Jun-Wei Zhang and Li-Chen Wu. Chun-Wei Liu crushed a homer, and Yu-Ching Tseng collected 2 RBI and 2 walks.
  • Venezuela 8, South Korea 4. Lewis Castillo was 2-for-5 with 3 RBI, and Pedro Martínez went 2-for-3 to help Venezuela advance to the super round.
  • Puerto Rico 8, China 4. Luis Gonzalez's 2-run single extended Puerto Rico's winning streak to 4 games, and he was 3-for-3 with 5 RBI in this game. The winning pitcher was Alejandro Gonzalez.
  • Australia 13, Great Britain 12. Charlie Collins was 4-for-4 with 3 RBI, but he couldn't carry his country to beat Australia (which he had previously represented in international competition!). Chris Burke knocked in 5 runs, and Jaylin Rae went 2-for-3 with 3 runs scored.
  • Nicaragua 1, Netherlands 0. Both team were silenced until Edmerson Castro's game-winning RBI single in the 7th inning. Samuel Guadamuz struck out 7 in 5 2/3 innings, and Justin Morales completed the game with 8 Ks but got the loss.
  • Japan 7, Colombia 1. Shinnosuke Nishimura's 3-run dinger secured the win for Japan, and Kento Masuda completed 4 innings with 3 strikeouts.

September 10[edit]

  • Nicaragua 7, South Korea 1. Nicaragua remained unbeaten. Emanuel Trujillo collected 3 RBI, and Stanling Orozco pitched 4 1/3 innings without allowing an earned run to get the win.
  • China 4, Australia 1. A big win for China as they advanced to the super round for the first time in the history of the event. Wei Chao fanned 5 in 6 innings, and Yi Zhou crushed a homer against Ky Jackson.
  • Netherlands 11, South Africa 2. Jakey Josepha was 3-for-4 with 5 RBI and Netherlands got their second win. Luke November and Kyle Schwartz both got 3 hits for South Africa.
  • Puerto Rico 3, Colombia 2. David Acevedo pitched 4 shutout innings, and Colombia blanked their opponent in the first six innings. However, Puerto Rico's Osvaldo Torres hit a game-tying 2-run double in the 7th inning, and Randal Díaz's sacrifice fly gave Puerto Rico their fourth win.
  • Taiwan 3, Venezuela 0. Yu-Ting Lu fanned 4 in 4 innings to get the win, and Hsin Chiu got 2 RBI.
  • Japan 4, Great Britain 1. In a rain-shortened match, Oga Nishimura completed the game with 3 Ks, and Ryo Imazato drove in 2 runs. Great Britain only got two hits, and they lost all 5 games in the first round.

September 12[edit]

  • South Africa 8, Great Britain 6. Two teams without a win met each other, and South Africa topped their opponent with a 6-run inning. Darian Pretorius was 2-for-4 with 3 RBI.
  • Taiwan 10, Colombia 0. Tzu-Hao Huang, Ping-Hung Chen and Po-Huai Yin combined to fan 7 to blanked Colombia. Nian-Hao Wang was 3-for-4 with 2 RBI, and Yu-Ching Tseng also knocked in 2 runs.
  • Netherlands 3, Australia 2. Gedionne Marlin's 2-run single helped Netherlands get the win, and Pim Vijfvinkel was the winning pitcher.
  • Puerto Rico 1, Nicaragua 0. Puerto Rico ended Nicaragua's 5-game winning streak thanks to Luis Enrique Hernandez's game-winning RBI single in the 7th inning. Jorhan Laboy struck out 8 in 6 1/3 shutout innings to get the win, and Axel Zapata got the loss although he got 8 strikeouts in 6 innings.
  • Japan 5, Venezuela 1. Yuichiro Murakami hit a homer, and Kanta Aiba collected 2 RBI to carry Japan to their first win of the super round. The winning pitcher is Koki Takawaki, who struck out 6 in 5 innings.
  • South Korea 7, China 2. Hyun-suk Choi struck out 9 with only one hit allowed in 6 innings to get the win, and Dae-sun Jeong was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI.

September 13[edit]

  • China 6, Venezuela 5. Yi Zhou drove in 2 runs and Qirui Wu hit a RBI triple to help China get their first win in the super round. Venezuela scored three in the 7th inning but Xiang Wang still closed the door.
  • Japan 9, Nicaragua 1. Kosuke Sasamori fanned 4 in 5 shutout innings to get the win, and Shinnosuke Nishimura was 2-for-2 with 2 RBI. Kazuhiro Ura and Takuya Yamada both hit a homer.
  • Puerto Rico 3, South Korea 1. Agnel Miranda completed 6 innings to beat Ki-ho Park, and Jankel Ortiz drove in 3 runs. An-seok Jeong got the only hit for Korea in the game.
  • Taiwan 4, Australia 3. Heng-Yu Ho went 2-for-2 with 2 RBI, and Chia-Hui Tseng got the win with 4 Ks in 4 innings.
  • Colombia 12, South Africa 3. Andrey Enrrique Martinez drew 3 walks and scored three. Nolan Beltran and Jean Henao both collected 3 RBI to help Colombia got their first win in the second round.
  • Great Britain 2, Netherlands. Great Britain finally won their first game in the entire event thanks to Zac Sohosky's completed game with 9 strikeouts.

September 14[edit]

  • Puerto Rico 3, Venezuela 0. Puerto Rico remained invincible in the super round, and they shut out Venezuela with 9 strikeouts to advance to the final.
  • Japan 2, South Korea 1. Ryoju Goto pitched 5 strong innings, and Japan advanced to the finals. They only get two hits, but 5 walks from Tae-hyun Kim gave them the runs they needed.
  • China 4, Nicaragua 0. The hosts made history again, and they advanced to the semifinal for the first time in the history of a global event. Wei Zhao completed a 5-hit shutout, and Yuyang Li went 2-for-3 with a RBI.
  • Great Britain 2, Taiwan 1. Taiwan surprisingly lost to Great Britain as Oliver Duthie blanked his opponent with 3 strikeouts in 5 innings. Michael Flaherty was 2-for-3 and knocked in the winning run.
  • Australia 9, South Africa 2. Solomon Maguire crushed a homer, and Cayden Nicoletto was 2-for-2 with a RBI. Australia beat South Africa to secure 9th place.
  • Netherlands 7, Colombia 3.Darryl Collins was 2-for-2 with 3 runs, and Pim Vijfvinkel got the win with 2 1/3 shutout innings.

September 15[edit]

  • Nicaragua 3, China 1. China's miracle run ended in the Bronze Medal game. Stanling Orozco only allowed a run in 6 innings, and Emanuel Trujillo collected 2 RBI. Xiang Wang pitched 5 shutout innings for China.
  • Japan 5, Puerto Rico 0. The defending champion shut out their opponent and won Gold. Kosei Nakakubo and Kosuke Sasamori only allowed 6 hits, and Takuya Yamada scored twice.
