2018 U-23 Baseball World Cup

The 2018 U-23 Baseball World Cup was the 2nd edition of the U-23 Baseball World Cup . Participating were South Africa, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Taiwan, Puerto Rico, Czech, Japan, Colombia, the Netherlands, Mexico, South Korea and Australia. It was held in Barranquilla, Colombia.

  • Australia 5, Czechia 3. Nicholas Hutchings completed 6 2/3 innings without allowing a earned run and fanned 7 to get the win. Robbie Glendinning was 3-for-4, and Ulrich Bojarski crushed a homer.
  • Japan 3, Taiwan 1. Another great performance by a Japanese hurler. Atsuki Taneichi struck out 9 in 7 shutout innings to get the win, and Hisanori Yasuda's 2-run homer in the 3rd inning secured the victory. Shuo-Cheng Wei also pitched 7 innings for Taiwan, but they only scored once, on Cheng-En Lee's solo shot, so he got the loss.
  • Mexico 14, Netherlands 7. Bernardo Heras and Fabricio Macias both got 3 hits, and Jose Ureña was 2-for-3 with 3 RBI and a homer. Francisco Haro collected 9 strikeouts in 5 innings to get the win.
  • Dominican Republic 8, South Korea 2.Wendell Rijo drove in 3 runs, and Eguy Rosario was 2-for-5 with a homer to help Dominicans get their second straight win.
  • Colombia 11, South Africa 0. Sergio Palacio and Hugo Beltran only allowed 2 runs in 7 innings, and the hosts blanked their opponent. Brayan Emery was 3-for-3 with 2 RBI.
  • Venezuela 7, Puerto Rico 2. Venezuela came from behind in the 5th inning thanks to Yoel Romero's 2-run single, and Anthony Concepcion hit a homer to add 2 insurance runs.

  • Japan 7, Mexico 2. Kosuke Sakaguchi struck out 8 in 4 2/3 innings, and Yasuhito Uchida secured the win with a 3-run dinger in the first inning.
  • Australia 4, Dominican Republic 3. Facing a 2-0 deficit, Australia's Jordan McArdle saved his nation with a 3-run homer against Wilber Pérez. Jeremy Young got the win.
  • South Korea 6, Puerto Rico 3. Jin-won Ye was 3-for-5 with 2 RBI, and Sang-hyeon Jeon completed 5 innings with 4 strikeouts to help Korea grab their second win. Emmanuel Rivera crushed a homer for Puerto Rico.
  • Venezuela 8, Czechia 2. Venezuela remained unbeaten thanks to two homers, by Leandro Cedeno and Joscar Alvarez.

October 22[edit]

  • Japan 5, Netherlands 0. Hiroki Kondo dominated the game with 12 strikeouts in 7 shutout innings, and Hisanori Yasuda extended his solid performance as he was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI.
  • South Korea 14, Australia 7. In a batter's contest, 2B Chan-hyung Kim crushed 2 homers with 6 RBI and South Korea topped Australia. Dong-hui Han was 3-for-4 with a homer, and Mitchell Edwards homered twice for Australia.
  • Taiwan 12, South Africa 0. Kuo-Hao Chiang pitched 4 shutout innings, and Yun-Chen Tai crushed a grand slam to help Taiwan complete a 7-inning mercy-rule shutout.
  • Venezuela 7, Dominican Republic 2. Ivan Andueza no-hit his opponent for 6 innings with 10 Ks to get the win, and Venezuela advanced to the super round.
  • Mexico 7, Colombia 6. Mexico defeated the hosts in a close game. Colombia's Derwin Pomare was 2-for-5 with a 3-run, go-ahead double in the 7th inning, but Mexico tied the game thanks to Hernando Chiquillo's wild pitch. Roberto Valenzuela then added a RBI triple in the 8th inning and secured the win.
  • Puerto Rico 20, Czechia 0. Puerto Rico completely destroyed their opponent in the only 5-inning mercy-ruled game of the event. Gabriel Cancel was 2-for-4 with 6 RBI and a homer, and Conde Duprey pitched 5 shutout innings with 6 strikeouts.

October 23[edit]

  • Netherlands 10, Taiwan 9. The Netherlands scored 5 in the first two innings, but Taiwan tied the game in the 8th inning with Kai-Wei Lee's sacrifice fly. In extra innings, Namoh Iyang drew a RBI walk for Taiwan, but Junior Martina then tied a game with a sacrifice fly. When the bases were loaded, Cheng-Yu Wu plunked Tijmen Takke and the Netherlands stayed alive in this round.
  • Venezuela 9, South Korea 2. Nivaldo Rodríguez struck out 4 in 6 shutout innings, and Jose Rodriguez closed the door with 7 Ks in 3 2/3 shutout innings. Carlos Machado collected 3 hits again, and Venezuela remained unbeaten.
  • Mexico 13, South Africa 3. Roberto Valenzuela crushed a homer with 3 RBI, and Orlando Pina drove in 4 runs to help Mexico call the game early.
  • Dominican Republic 8, Czechia 7. Czech nearly got their first win, and they took the lead with Eduardo Del Rosario's wild pitch in the 10th inning. However, Hansel Moreno then tied the game with a single, and Jeison Guzmán walked it off with another RBI single.
  • Japan 7, Colombia 2. Kairi Shimada scored three runs and collected 3 hits, and Japan got their 5th straight win.
  • Puerto Rico 3, Australia 2. Isan Diaz knocked in all of Puerto Rico's three runs with 2 homers, and Osvaldo Berríos fanned 7 in 5 1/3 innings to get the win.

October 24[edit]

  • Netherlands 7, South Africa 3. Swindly Lint and Tijmen Takke both collected 2 RBI, and the Netherlands collected their second win. Rowan Ebersohn crushed the first homer for South Africa.
  • Taiwan 6, Colombia 5. Both teams only scored once in the first 9 innings. Liang-Chih Chen completed 8 1/3 innings for Taiwan, and Yun-Chen Tai tied the game with a homer in the 7th inning, Kai-Wei Lee drove in 3 runs with a double in the 10th inning, and Juan Zabala also hit a 3-run triple in the bottom. Chun-Chang Su then replaced Shou-Cheng Wei, and he closed the door with 2 Ks to sent Taiwan to the super round.

October 25[edit]

  • Japan 3, South Korea 2. Yasuhito Uchida crushed a 2-run homer in the 6th inning, and Japan remained undefeated. South Korea had a chance to tie the game, but Ukyo Shuto nabbed two runners at home to preserve their win.
  • Czechia 7, Netherlands 6. Czechia finally got their first win of the event, against another European country. Jakub Grepl hit a homer, and Jiří Vavruša got the win with 3 1/3 perfect innings. Sherten Apostel homered for the Netherlands.
  • Taiwan 3, Dominican Republic 1. Taiwan again won in extra innings after a 1-1 tie in the first 9 innings, and their hero was again the same. Kai-Wei Lee, who hit a game-winning double in their last game, drove in 2 runs with a double in the 10th inning. Dominican's Claudio Galva pitched 6 shutout innings, and Hao-Chun Cheng fanned 8 in 9 innings without allowing a earned run.
  • Puerto Rico 7, South Africa 5. José Miranda and Gabriel Cancel both homered, and Puerto Rico got their first win in the consolation round.
  • Mexico 10, Venezuela 4. Roberto Valenzuela crushed a grand slam, Jose Ureña also crushed a solo shot and Mexico combined to score double-digit runs. Yoel Romero hit a 2-run dinger for Venezuela , but that was not enough to give them a win.
  • Colombia 18, Australia 5. Derwin Pomare was 5-for-5 with 6 RBI and a homer, and Carlos Vidal also collected 4 hits and crushed a home run. Sam Kennelly, Zac Shepherd and Jordan McArdle all hit homers for Australia, but they still lost this batter's competition.

October 26[edit]

  • South Korea 5, Taiwan 2. Min-hyeok Kim and Chan-hyung Kim hit long balls, and Sang-hyeon Jeon got the win as he only allowed one run in 5 innings. Wen-Hsien Chang was the only bright spot for Taiwan, as he went 3-for-4 with a homer.
  • South Africa 9, Czechia 2. Two teams on the bottom of the leaderboard met each other, and South Africa got their first win. Garth Cahill fanned 7 in 5 innings, and Tyler Smith had a 3-for-5 record.
  • Japan 6, Venezuela 3. The leader of Group B still couldn't stop Japan's winning streak. Kengo Horiuchi hit a game-winning, come-from-behind 3-run home run in the 8th inning, and Atsuki Taneichi fanned 8 in 8 innings to get the win.
  • Australia 14, Netherlands 3. Jeremy Young completed the game in a 7-inning, mercy-ruled win. Jack Barrie went 3-for-4 with 6 RBI, and Robbie Glendinning scored four while hitting a homer.
  • Mexico 3, Dominican Republic 1. Wilber Pérez and Harol González no-hit Mexico for 5 innings, but they completed the rally thanks to Orlando Pina's 2-run single in the 6th inning and advanced to the final.
  • Colombia 3, Puerto Rico 1. In the only 11-inning game of the event, Puerto Rico's Carlos Vidal was tonight's hero with a 2-run, game-winning single in the 11th inning. Juan Escorcia fanned 10 with only a hit allowed in 6 innings, but he ended up with a no-decision.

October 27[edit]

  • Japan 4, Dominican Republic 0. Japan won all three games in the super round, thanks to Kosuke Sakaguchi's 7 strong innings with 8 Ks. Kento Harasawa was 3-for-4, and Hisanori Yasuda scored twice.
  • Australia 9, South Africa 4. Ulrich Bojarski was 2-for-4 with 4 RBI and a homer, and Christopher Horne got the win.
  • Taiwan 4, Venezuela 3. Taiwan scored 3 early, but they couldn't protect their lead. Carlos Machado tied the game with a 2-run single, then Yoel Romero secured the win with a RBI double in the 8th inning.
  • Puerto Rico 11, Netherlands 3. Jay Feliciano and Isan Diaz both homered, and Puerto Rico ended the event with a win.
  • South Korea 3, Mexico 2. Tae-seong Choi saved his nation with a pinch-hit, 2-run go-ahead double in the 6th inning, and South Korea advanced to the Bronze Medal Game. Hui-woon Ryu fanned 5 in 7 1/3 innings to get the win.
  • Colombia 12, Czechia 2. Milton Ramos was 3-for-4 with 3 runs scored, and Randy Cuentas completed 5 shutout innings to lead Colombia to a 8-inning mercy-ruled win in their final game.

October 28[edit]

  • Venezuela 5, South Korea 4. Tae-seong Choi nearly became Korea's hero with a game-tying RBI double in the 7th inning, but Jorma Rodriguez drove in a clutch run with a grounder in the 8th inning. Venezuela won their first medal in the U-23 Baseball World Cup.
  • Mexico 2. Japan 1. Seemingly invincible Japan was knocked down in the final. Hiroki Kondoh fanned 5 in 8 shutout innings, but Carlos Morales also completed 8 innings with 6 strikeouts and only one hit allowed. Fabricio Macias knocked in 2 runs with a single in the 10th inning, and Erick Casillas closed the door. Mexico won the historic Gold.
