Biographical Information[edit]

Outfielder Gilbert Gómez played in the minor league system of the New York Mets from 2009 to 2015, peaking at AA in his final season, when he was with the Binghamton Mets of the Eastern League. He was a good defensive outfielder, but did not hit much, as his career batting average was .229 and he never achieved more than 19 doubles or 6 homers. In his only season in AA, he hit just .130 in 69 games.

In 2017, he made a brief return to professional baseball as part of the Dominican Republic Team that toured the Canadian-American Association alongside a so-called Cuban national team. That team was badly overmatched and he hit just .179 in 17 games. He was also active in the winter leagues, playing briefly for the Tigres del Licey, but never more than a handful of games in a season. However, in 2023-2024, he managed the team and led them to a participation in the 2024 Caribbean Series.

After his playing career, Gómez became a coach and manager in the Mets organization. He was a hitting coach for the DSL Mets 2 in 2018 and bench coach of the Columbia Fireflies of the South Atlantic League in 2019. Gómez was slated for a Kingsport Mets bench coach position in 2020 before COVID-19 shut down the minor league season. He was the bench coach for the FCL Mets in 2021 and St. Lucie Mets in 2022. Gómez was then named St. Lucie's manager in 2023. In 2024 and 2025, he was manager of the Brooklyn Cyclones in the South Atlantic League.

In 2026, Gómez was named first base coach and outfield coach with the Mets.

Gómez also has considerable experience on the international stage. He served as a coach on the team that represented the Dominican Republic at the 2018 U-23 Baseball World Cup as well as in the 2021 Americas Olympic Qualifier and 2021 Olympics (when his country won their first Olympic medal in baseball). In 2026, Gómez was the assistant manager of the Dominican Republic team that played in the 2026 World Baseball Classic.

In addition, Gómez has held various positions in the Dominican League. He started as an assistant hitting coach for the Leones del Escogido in 2017/2018 and 2018/2019. Gómez began the 2019/2020 in the same role before taking over as the team's Quality Control Coach on October 24th. After a couple years away from coaching winter ball, Gómez was the Quality Control Coach for the Tigres del Licey in 2022/2023. He returned in that role the next season before being promoted to manager on December 16th, replacing Jose Offerman. The change in leadership paid dividends as Gómez led the Tigres to a League championship and participation in the 2024 Caribbean Series. Gómez continued to lead Licey through the 2025/2026 season.

Gómez comes from a baseball family. His brother Dariel Gómez is a professional baseball player and his brother José is a professional scout for the Tampa Bay Rays and an executive for Leones del Escogido in the Dominican League (LIDOM). Another brother, Hector, is one of the top sports journalists in the Dominican Republic.[1]
