Biographical Information[edit]
Elkin Alcala has pitched in the Dominican Republic, US, Italy, Colombia and Mexico.
He began his pro career in the Miami Marlins system, going 1-1 with a 4.74 ERA for the 2016 DSL Marlins. The next summer, he was superb with the DSL Marlins (7-0, 2 Sv, 0.75 in 13 G) and GCL Marlins (2-0, 2.03 in 5 G). Despite only 13 relief appearances and no starts, he tied for 5th in the Dominican Summer League in wins. He also tied for 5th in the Marlins chain in victories. In 2018, he was 4-2 with 5 saves and a 3.30 ERA for the Batavia Muckdogs, walking only 5 (one intentional) in 30 innings. He had a 10.38 ERA for Colombia in the 2018 U-23 Baseball World Cup. [1]
In 2019, he was with the Clinton Lumber Kings (3-3, 4 Sv, 4.09 in 26 G) and Jupiter Hammerheads (6 R in 7 1/3 IP) to end his time in the Marlins chain. In 2021, he was 7-1 with a 1.99 ERA for Collecchio in Italy, striking out 118 and walking 18 in 68 innings, yielding just 34 hits. As the league had expanded a lot, there was a wide range in talent and some lopsided stats; he only made the leaderboards in Ks. [2] He was 1-0 with a 2.27 ERA in the 2021 U-23 Baseball World Cup, beating Panama. [3] That winter, he was 3-1 with a 1.56 ERA for the Caimanes de Barranquilla in his native Colombia. He then was superb in the 2022 Caribbean Series, tossing a solid game against Panama then topping the Dominican Gigantes del Cibao in the title game, beating Raúl Valdés by throwing shutout ball for the first five innings. It was the first a Colombian team won a Caribbean Series (and only one through 2026).
Alcala split 2022 between two Mexican League teams, with a 2-2 record. In the winter, he was the closer for the Venados de Mazatlán, going 1-1 with 20 saves and a 1.57 ERA. He led the Mexican Pacific League in saves, one ahead of Brandon Koch. He was originally listed on the Colombian national team roster for the 2023 World Baseball Classic but was a late cut shortly before the event began. [4] He again pitched for two Mexican League teams that summer, going 3-3 with 11 saves and a 3.69 ERA.
He had another big winter for the Venados in 2023-2024 at 1-1, 1.71 with 20 saves. He again led in saves, 3 ahead of Peyton Gray and Jake Sanchez. He pitched 2 1/3 shutout innings as a reinforcement for the Naranjeros de Hermosillo in the 2024 Caribbean Series. He slipped to 2-4 with 8 saves and an ERA over 7 between two LMB clubs in 2024. He only pitched one shutout inning that winter for the Venados. He was 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA for the Caimanes in the 2025-2026 Colombian League. [5]
Elkin was then picked for Colombia's team for the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
