Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Peyton Gray was just five weeks shy of his 31st birthday when he made his major league debut for the Texas Rangers on April 23, 2026, pitching the final inning of a 6-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. He had been called up from the AAA Round Rock Express that same day and faced the minimum three batters in his debut, not giving up anything and recording one strikeout.

He was undrafted coming out of Florida Gulf Coast University in 2018 and signed as a free agent with the Colorado Rockies. He pitched in their system in 2018 and 2019, then was released in February of 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic shut down spring training and a number of teams reacted by gutting all of their more marginal minor leaguers in order to save on salaries (although the total amount saved was peanuts given how little players in the low minors are paid). As a result, Peyton pitched for the Milwaukee Milkmen in the American Association that year, taking advantage of one of the few professional leagues still in operation that strange summer. He posted dominant stats, allowing just 10 hits and no runs in 30 games and 32 innings while recording 14 saves and striking out 56 batters. That got the attention of the Kansas City Royals who signed him on September 29th.

He pitched in the Royals system in 2021, going 3-3, 2.80 with 7 saves in 34 games spread between three levels, Low-A, High-A and AA. he was again absolutely dominant in the two lower levels, but his ERA was 6.28 in 8 games for the AA Northwest Arkansas Naturals and due to an injury, he did not pitch after late August. He was still unable to pitch when the 2022 season started and he was released again on July 16th. he found himself back with the Milkmen, and as had happened two years earlier, he absolutely baffled American Association hitters, going 2-0, 1.20 in 15 games, with 22 strikeouts in 15 innings. In 2023, he was 1-2, 1.38 with 9 saves for Milwaukee. The Cincinnati Reds signed him after that season, but injuries prevented him from pitching in their system. However, in the 2023-24 and 2024-25 winter league seasons, he was again dominant, both years with the Algodoneros de Guasave in the Mexican Pacific League, posting a virgin ERA in 26 games the first year, and one of 1.57 in 54 games the second. He was already 29 at that point, but the Rangers figured that it was worth giving him another shot.

In 2025, he went 8-6, 3.58 in 45 games between the Frisco Rough Riders and Round Rock Express, the latter representing his first experience in AAA. He struck out 89 batters in 73 innings. He pitched for Estrellas Orientales in the Dominican League after the season, then started 2026 back at Round Rock. He had not given up a run and recorded a win and 2 saves in 7 outings when the Rangers called him up to the Show.
