Team History

The Cedar Rapids Kernels, of the Midwest League and briefly in High-A Central, play less than 90 minutes from the iconic Field of Dreams farm. The Minnesota Twins farmhands play their home games at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids, IA.

The farm outside Dyersburg, IA, was a shooting location for the 1989 film. A small museum later established there caught the attention of retired MLB great Frank Thomas, who bought it to redevelop it into a much larger tourist attraction.

The Kernels played in the 2022 minor league Field of Dreams Game - ironically, as the visiting team. After MLB decided to follow the wildly successful 2021 big-league event with at least one more, a farm-level precursor was added pitting eastern Iowa's two minor league teams against each other two days earlier. Although Cedar Rapids is 20 miles closer to Dyersburg than Quad Cities, the River Bandits were designated the home team. Both teams used throw-back nicknames - the Kernels under the Cedar Rapids Bunnies moniker of 1904-1932 and the Bandits under the Davenport Blue Sox ID of three different stretches between 1913 and 1937. The Sox won the game, 7-2, in front of 7,532 fans.

MLB's 2021 Minor League Reorganization raised the Kernels, and most of the MwL, one level.

The Kernels play Copa de la Diversión Hispanic engagement campaign games as Granos de Cedar Rapids (Cedar Rapids Grain - or, the team says - Kernels).
