History, Comments, Contributions[edit]
The 2025 Philadelphia Phillies had the best record in the National League after 50 games on May 22nd, having gone 32-18. This was largely thanks to winning the last seven games of that stretch. It was not an easy, peaceful ride, however, as that part of the season featured an 80-game suspension being handed to their closer, José Alvarado, for a positive test for PEDs, after he was off to the best start of his career. It also came after teams in NL West had received most of the media attention in the early going, and also after trailing the New York Mets from April 13 to May 18th. That last date coincided with Alvarado's suspension, and he had 4 wins, 7 saves and an ERA of 2.70 at the time. But there were also some positives, for example Kyle Schwarber, after having been moved from the lead-off spot to the middle of the order, was tied for the major league home run lead with 17 and had hit #300 for his career on May 19th. He was by far the team's best hitter, although 1B Bryce Harper and SS Trea Turner were also off to nice starts. On the mound, their purported ace, Aaron Nola, was struggling badly, going 1-7, 6.16 in his first 9 starts, but there were plenty of others to pick up the slack. Seven pitchers had started games for the Phils, and apart from Nola, they had gone 20-5, with 3 of the losses going to Taijuan Walker in spite of an excellent ERA of 2.97. Even rookie Mick Abel, a former first-round pick, had pitched scoreless ball in his lone start and picked up his first career win in what was his major league debut on May 18th. Off-season signee Jesus Luzardo was the best of group, going 5-0, 1.95 in 10 starts.
After playing exactly .500 ball in June and July, the Phillies got hot again in August, when they went 18-11, pulling into first place to stay on August 3rd and building a six-game lead over the Mets by the end of the month. The Mets were reeling by that point, and Philadelphia applied the chokehold in September, winning 11 of their first 14 games while New York was sputtering. A 6-5 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on September 15th was the one that clinched the division title, their lead having grown to 12 1/2 games with two weeks remaining to the season. On September 24th, they hit a franchise-record eight homers in defeating the Miami Marlins, 11-1, with Edmundo Sosa becoming the first shortstop in ream history with a three-homer game. Schwarber also homered twice to reach 56, just two shy of the franchise record of 58 set by Ryan Howard in 2006. The game included a four-homer inning in the 4th, a first for the Phils since 1985 in the days of Mike Schmidt and Juan Samuel.
