History, Comments, Contributions[edit]

On May 31st, the 2025 Washington Nationals tied a 77-year-old National League record by scoring 9 runs before recording a single out against the Arizona Diamondbacks on their way to an 11-7 win. This was one run short of the major league record set by the 2003 Boston Red Sox, who had started a game with 10 runs before recording an out on June 27th. The Nats' feat tied the 1948 Philadelphia Phillies. Washington chased Brandon Pfaadt after all eight batters he faced had reached - six on base hits and two who were hit by pitch - and all eight came to score. Four of the hits were doubles, and after Scott McGough replaced Pfaadt, Daylen Lile hit another double, C.J. Abrams was hit by a pitch for a second time that inning, and James Wood singled to make it 9-0 before McGough finally struck out Nathaniel Lowe. Washington scored another run on a force out before the inning ended. It was also the team's biggest 1st inning since its relocation to the Nation's Capital in 2005.

That game turned out to be a high point for the Nats in a disappointing season. With the development of some promising youngsters, mainly Abrams, Wood and P MacKenzie Gore, things looked good heading into the season following five straight losing seasons after their 2019 World Series win, with many observers picking them to have a break-out year. It wasn't the case. After being at 28-30 and in third place that day, and having just completed a month in which they were 3 games over .500, the Nats went into a tailspin. The month of June was terrible, with a record of 7-19 and the Nats fell into last place on June 24th. On July 3rd, Dave Martinez won his 500th game as a manager - all with the Nats - but following a 6-4 loss to the Boston Red Sox on July 6th, he was fired as was GM Mike Rizzo, marking the end of an era in Washington. The team had fallen to 37-53 by then. Rizzo had been the second-longest tenured general manager in the majors, after Brian Cashman of the New York Yankees, and was only one week away from making the first overall selection in the 2025 amateur draft when he was replaced on an interim basis by assistant GM Mike DeBartolo. A replacement for Martinez was only announced 24 hours later, with bench coach Miguel Cairo taking over as interim skipper.
