Biographical Information[edit]

Infielder Edmundo Sosa was on the roster of the Panamanian national team for the 2017 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers. He made his major league debut with the St. Louis Cardinals on September 23, 2018.

He only played sparingly in his first two major league seasons, with 3 games in 2018 and another 11 in 2019. He then did not play at all in 2020 as he spent the year at the Cardinals' alternate training site during the COVID-19 pandemic. He finally got a chance to play regularly in 2021, when he appeared in 113 games, hitting .271 with 6 homers and 27 RBIs for an OPS+ of 104. He played mainly shortstop and second base that year, but in future seasons would settle into the role of utility infielder, getting playing time at second base, shortstop and third base, but never reaching as many as 300 at-bats in a season.

He was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies in return for P JoJo Romero on July 30, 2022, but the move did not affect his usage pattern. He had played in the Wild Card Game for the Cardinals against the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2021, and then appeared in the postseason in each of his first four seasons with the Phillies, including playing in the 2022 World Series against the Houston Astros. In all cases, he saw only limited action, going 2 for 8 over four series in the 2022 Postseason and 0 for 1 the next year. He had played 104 games with 279 at-bats in 2023, his second busiest season, and hit .251 with 10 homers and 30 RBIs. In 2024, he hit .257 with 7 homers and 31 RBIs in 90 games. He was having a typical season by his standards in 2025 when he put his name in the Phillies' record book on September 24th by becoming the first shortstop in franchise history to have a three-homer game. That came in an 11-1 demolition of the Miami Marlins in which the team as a whole set a record by banging eight long balls.
