Biographical Information

Pitcher Mick Abel was selected in the first round of the 2020 amateur draft by the Philadelphia Phillies with the 15th overall pick. He was the first high school pitcher to be selected, in a draft in which the early picks were dominated by college players, a result of the COVID-19 pandemic which wiped out most high school sports that spring. He had played for the USA junior national team in 2019, helping to raise his profile.

He made his professional debut in 2021 with the Clearwater Threshers of the Low-A Southeast (the former Florida State League), going 1-3, 4.43 in 14 starts while pitching 44 2/3 innings, as the Phillies were careful about limiting his workload. He was able to air it out more in 2022, when he went 7-8, 4.01 for the Jersey Shore BlueClaws of the South Atlantic League and 1-3, 3.52 for the Reading Fightin Phils of the Eastern League. Reaching AA while still only 20 years old, he combined for a total of 108 1/3 innings in 23 starts that year, striking out 130 batters and walking 50.

He was named to the National League team for the 2023 Futures Game. That year, he went 5-6, 4.13 in 23 games and 113 2/3 innings between Reading and the AAA Lehigh Valley IronPigs. He then spent all of 2024 in the International League for Lehigh Valley, but had a poor season, going 3-12, 6.46 1n 24 games as his hit rate shot up. However, he bounced back nicely with the same team at the start of the next season, as he was 5-2, 2.53 in his first 8 starts, leading to his first opportunity to pitch in the big leagues.

In his major league debut for the Phillies on May 18, 2025, he started against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Citizens Bank Park and did not give up a run in six innings, gaining credit for a 1-0 win. His nine strikeouts tied Curt Simmons for most in a debut in franchise history. He made 5 starts for the Phils and was at 2-2, 5.04 with 21 strikeouts in 25 innings when on July 30th he was traded to the Minnesota Twins, along with Eduardo Tait, in return for Jhoan Duran.
