Biographical Information[edit]
Shortstop Bobby Dickerson was drafted in the 23rd round of the 1987 amateur draft by the New York Yankees and played seven seasons of minor league ball with the Yankees and Baltimore Orioles.
Dickerson started his coaching career in 1993 as a player/coach with the Rochester Red Wings. He was the Orioles' Minor League Infield Instructor from 1994 to 1997 while also managing the Bluefield Orioles in 1996-1997. Dickerson moved to the Arizona Diamondbacks organization for the next four years. He was the Dbacks' Minor League Infield Coordinator in 1998 and Minor League Field Coordinator in 1999. Dickerson managed the El Paso Diablos in 2000 before returning to an Infield Coordinator position in 2001.
From 2002 to 2005, Dickerson managed the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx and then the Iowa Cubs in 2009, both in the Chicago Cubs chain. After the 2002 season he managed the Mesa Solar Sox in the Arizona Fall League. Between managing stints, Dickerson was the Cubs' Minor League Infield/Bunting Coordinator for the years 2006-2008.
Dickerson rejoined the Orioles organization in 2010. He had been serving as Baltimore's Minor League Infield Coordinator/Latin America Field Coordinator when he was named interim manager of the Norfolk Tides on June 4th. Dickerson replaced manager Gary Allenson who was promoted to a coaching position on the big league club. Dickerson returned to the position of Minor League Infield Coordinator in 2011. The Orioles promoted him to the major leagues for the first time on August 15th to serve as the team's bullpen coach for the remainder of the season. Dickerson went back to his Infield Coordinator role in 2012 for a final time. In 2013, Baltimore promoted Dickerson to the major league staff on a full-time basis. He was the Orioles third base coach and infield instructor through the 2018 season.
In 2019, Dickerson joined the Philadelphia Phillies as infield coach, then in 2020 was named bench coach of the San Diego Padres under new manager Jayce Tingler, staying until the end of the 2021 season. In 2022, he began a second stint as the Phillies' infield coach where he remained through the 2025 season.
In addition to his work in the U.S., Dickerson did some managing in the winter leagues. He was manager of the Águilas de Mexicali during the 2009/2010 Mexican Pacific League season. Dickerson spent most of the 2016/2017 season managing the Gigantes del Cibao of the Dominican League before being replaced on January 12, 2017. Dickerson returned to Águilas in 2019, but was fired on November 8th.
