2000 AAA All-Star Game

The 2000 AAA All Star Game was played on July 12, 2000 in Rochester, NY. The event was hosted by the Rochester Red Wings, the AAA affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles at Frontier Field.

The home team International League was managed by Marc Bombard of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons. His coaches were Rich Bombard of the Pawtucket Red Sox and Trey Hillman of the Columbus Clippers. The visiting Pacific Coast League was led by Tucson Sidewinders manager Tom Spencer. His assistants were Leon Durham of the Edmonton Trappers and Rick Anderson from the Salt Lake Buzz. The game was broadcast on ESPN2 with Dave Barnett, Brian McRae and Joe Castellano calling the action.

After a scoreless first three innings the PCL put up a run an inning for the fourth through sixth innings before exploding for a four run 8th to take a commanding 7-0 lead. The International League scored 2 in the bottom of the eight but after the PCL added an insurance run in the top of the ninth before shutting down the International League in the ninth to take the 8-2 victory. The game was a sloppy one as the teams combined for 7 errors. The win went to Giovanni Carrara of the Colorado Springs Sky Sox and Tomo Ohka of the Pawtucket Red Sox took the loss.

The Stars of Stars Awards were given to the game MVP from each team. The International League’s award went to Javier Delahoya of the Rochester Red Wings. Delahoya pitched 2 innings of perfect ball with one strikeout. The Pacific Coast League award went to Joe Vitiello of the Las Vegas Stars. Vitiello went 3-3 with 3 runs scored and finished the game a home run short of a cycle.

The game featured future big league talent such as Todd Walker, Ramon Castro, Aubrey Huff, Alfonso Soriano and Tomo Ohka. As well as Ruben Sierra becoming the first player to play in the AAA All Star Game after playing in the Major League All-Star Game.
