(Redirected from 3000 strikeouts)
For decades, a pitcher recording 3,000 strikeouts was an almost unheard of accomplishment, as only Walter Johnson had managed the feat in baseball's first 100 years following the creation of the National Association. He was joined by Bob Gibson in 1974. In 2025, Clayton Kershaw became the 20th pitcher to reach the mark.
When Kershaw began closing in on the mark in 2025, cries familiar to anyone who had followed the 300 Wins mark over the years began to be heard: would he be the final pitcher to achieve the milestone? That seemed a strange proposition to make at a time when strikeout rates were at an all-time high, and the speculation was based on a misunderstanding of what it takes to reach the milestone: i.e. pitching effectively until your late 30's. The misunderstanding was that this had always been the case, and those who made it to 3,000 were always the exception.
