History, Comments, Contributions[edit]

The 2013 New York Mets set a team record by striking out 241 times in May. They were involved in a pair of marathon games against the Miami Marlins on April 29th and June 8th. Both games were started by Matt Harvey for the Mets and Jose Fernandez for the Marlins, two of the best young pitchers in the majors. However, both were long gone by the time the Mets lost the first contest, 4-3, in 15 innings, and the second 2-1, in 20 innings in the longest game ever played at Citi Field. Starter Shaun Marcum was the loser in both contests, pitching two innings in the first, and then putting up a tremendous effort in the second, with 7 scoreless innings before finally giving up the deciding run in the 20th inning in the second. Marcum fell to 0-7 with that hard-luck loss. They then lost a 15-inning game to the Arizona Diamondbacks on July 4th, 5-4, and played another endless game less than a week later, against the San Francisco Giants on July 8th. This time, they came out on top, 4-3, when Eric Young Jr. scored the winning on an error by SS Brandon Crawford with two outs in the top of the 16th inning.
