From June 15-21, the 1968 Chicago Cubs went a record 49 1/3 consecutive innings without scoring a run, beating a dubious mark set by the 1906 Philadelphia Athletics. It was one of numerous low-scoring records set in what has been dubbed the "Year of the Pitcher". The five straight shutout losses they endured during that stretch also tied a league mark. The streak started on the 15th, the final eight innings of a loss to the Atlanta Braves and continued with the following games: a 1 - 0 loss to Phil Niekro in 11 innings; a 1 - 0 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals' Nellie Briles; a 4 - 0 one-hitter tossed by Steve Carlton and a 1 - 0 loss to Bob Gibson, before they ended their scoreless streak when they beat the Cincinnati Reds, 3 - 2, behind Joe Niekro. George Culver the losing pitcher, allowed the Cubs' first score in the 3rd inning when he gave up a walk with the sacks full. During the drought, Fergie Jenkins allowed one run in 18 innings but was charged with a loss and a no-decision.
