[edit] Biographical Information
Patrick "Patsy" Donovan played professional ball for at least 21 years and managed for 19. He played 17 seasons in the majors, mostly in the National League of the 1890's and mostly as a rightfielder.
Some of his best years as a player were toward the end of his career, in the early 1900's with the St. Louis Cardinals. As a manager he was skipper for 11 seasons, never finishing higher than fourth in the league.
Donovan is also linked in history with a couple famous names from later eras. In 1914 he scouted the young Babe Ruth and convinced the Boston Red Sox that they had to sign him. Many years later he was George H.W. Bush's high school coach.
Donovan holds the records for the most games and at-bats by an Irish-born major leaguer.
