New England League
From BR Bullpen
The New England League existed in at least five incarnations. The first league to use the name competed from 1886-1888, the second from 1891-1899. From 1901 till 1915 the New England League played, and was classified as a class B loop when the NA was formed in 1902. The next attempt was a short-lived league, also a class B one (as were the others to follow) - this one only existed in 1919.
A third New England League was started up in 1926 and lasted five seasons before folding. After two years of quiet, a fourth New England League started in 1933; after one season it changed its name to the Northeastern League. The final attempt came in the deluge of new minor leagues after World War II and ran from 1946 through 1949.
Lawrence, Lowell, and Portland competed at some point in all the incarnations of the league.
