July 2: Today's featured birthday is that of Jim Hughes, who turns 75.
- 1969 - Bill Singer gets the first official save in Major League Baseball history, closing out a victory by Don Drysdale against the Reds.
- 1977 - In their inaugural game, the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Chicago White Sox 9-5. Al Woods hits a pinch-hit homer in his first career at-bat and Doug Ault goes deep twice.
- 1986 - Dwight Evans becomes the first player to hit the season's first pitch for a home run. Evans takes Jack Morris deep, but Boston still loses to the Tigers thanks to two Kirk Gibson homers.
- 1987 - Rick Mahler (pictured) ties the National League record with his third career Opening Day shutout. He holds the Phillies to three hits.
- 2006 - Kazuyoshi Tatsunami of the Chunichi Dragons becomes the third player in Nippon Pro Baseball history to smack two sayonara grand slams in his career.
