Team History[edit]
The inital Modesto Reds team first took the field in the early 1900's. First mentioned in the Stanislaus Weekly News *[1] in March of 1906, initially referred to as the Red Caps. By 1910 the Chicago White Sox took notice of the success of the Red and traveled to Modesto to play a game against them on March 7th. The White Sox beat Modesto 4-0 in front of 2,000 fans.
Until joining the California League in 1946, the Reds did not play in an organized league: they were an independent team until becoming a St. Louis Browns farm club in 1948. From 1949-1952, they were a farm club for the Pittsburgh Pirates, and in 1953 the Milwaukee Braves. From 1954-1961 the Reds were affiliated with the New York Yankees before changing their name to the Modesto Colts as the Houston Colt .45s affiliate for the 1962-1964 seasons. Modesto did not have a team for the 1965 season. Now affiliated with the Kansas City A's in 1966 the Modesto Reds name was revived. After one year, the Reds would change affiliates again as a farm club for the St. Louis Cardinals from 1967-1974. For the 1975 season the Reds changed their name to the Modesto A's.
Five future Hall of Fame members passed through Modesto when the team was known as the Reds: Sparky Anderson, Rollie Fingers, Reggie Jackson, Tony LaRussa and Ted Simmons.
