Team History[edit]
The Frisco RoughRiders, of the Texas League and briefly in Double-A Central, are Frisco's first professional baseball club. The Texas Rangers farmhands play their home games at Riders Field in Frisco, TX.
In 2003, the Rangers completed a 2001 plan: buying the Shreveport Swamp Dragons to move them to the Dallas suburb. They have been the Rangers' Double-A affiliate ever since. Their arrival made Frisco the most recent Texas city to join affiliated baseball for the first time.
The Rangers later fell into bankruptcy, changing hands in August 2010. However, new co-owner Chuck Greenberg sold out of the big club just eight months later and bought the 'Riders late in the 2014 season. They remain a Rangers' affiliate, and would have to get their permission to join any other team because of the Rangers' territorial rights.
The Riders nickname salutes the Rangers, which in turn salutes the Texas Rangers Division of the Texas Department of Public Safety. However, a 2015 rebrand took on a Teddy Roosevelt look - Roosevelt having founded the unrelated cavalry unit to serve in the Spanish-American War.
The Riders play Copa de la Diversión Hispanic engagement campaign games as Los Quesos de Frisco (Frisco Cheese).
