Biographical Information[edit]
Jorge Hernandez was picked by the Houston Astros in the 9th round of the 1986 amateur draft, but did not sign. He helped Troy State win the 1987 Division II World Series.
Hernandez began his coaching career at the University of Mobile in 1993 as a hitting coach. He remained with the Rams through the 2001 season. Over the next five years he continued coaching at the collegiate level and started coaching in the professional ranks. Sources differ on which years he spent with each organization, so this page will follow the dates on Hernandez' LinkedIn profile.[1] From Mobile, Hernandez moved to the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Islanders for three seasons (2002-2004). In 2006, he was the hitting coach for the University of West Florida Argonauts. During the summers of 2005-2006 Hernandez was the hitting coach for the Pensacola Pelicans of the independent Central Baseball League and American Association.
Starting in 2007, Hernandez has coached or managed in the Florida Marlins / Miami Marlins organization. He started as a hitting coach for the GCL Marlins in 2007 and Greensboro Grasshoppers in 2008. Hernandez got his first managing gig with the 2009 GCL Marlins where he remained through the 2012 season. In his first season as a minor league manager, he led his team to the best record in the Gulf Coast League. He returned to the Grasshoppers in 2013, this time as their skipper. Hernandez stepped away from managing in 2014 and spent 2014-2018 as the Marlins Minor League Infield Coordinator. In 2019, he was appointed manager of the Batavia Muckdogs, but encountered some health issues and was replaced by Tom Lawless shortly before the season began. Hernandez was scheduled to manage Batavia in 2020 before COVID-19 shut down the minor league season. When minor league teams resumed play, he managed the Jupiter Hammerheads in 2021 and Beloit Sky Carp in 2022. For the 2023-2024 seasons, Hernandez returned to the position of Minor League Infield Coordinator. He was the bench coach for the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp in 2025.
Hernandez moved to the Texas Rangers' organization as bench coach of the Frisco RoughRiders in 2026.
