The 1983 New York Yankees played the 81st season in team history. They finished in third place in the American League Eastern Division with a record of 91-71, 7 games behind the Baltimore Orioles. New York was managed by Billy Martin. The Yankees played at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees contemplated playing their home opener at Mile High Stadium in Denver, CO that year. Cracks had been discovered in the concrete at Yankee Stadium late during the 1982 season, and owner George Steinbrenner was concerned that these would not be repaired in time for the Yankees' first home game, scheduled for April 12th. He saw this as an opportunity to make some money by taking the team to a ballpark seating 80,000 in the largest untapped market in the majors; were the repairs to go on even longer, he thought about also playing a series at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, LA, another huge venue. The Yankees went so far as to make an announcement on November 10, 1982, about playing in Denver. However, meanwhile, the City of New York, owner of Yankee Stadium, threatened to sue, claiming it had an exclusive lease to host Yankees' games and soon obtained an injunction preventing the temporary move, as the judge agreed that the city was doing everything necessary to ensure the ballpark would be ready in time for opening day. This killed the idea.
