Tim Kelly was a relief pitcher in the Baltimore Orioles system in 1976 and 1977, posting a 9-2 record with a 2.36 ERA and 90 strikeouts in 80 innings for the Bluefield Orioles his first campaign. He joined the San Diego Padres system for 1978. Overall, he went 14-11 with a 3.79 ERA in 204 innings, striking out 184 batters.
He later scouted for the California/Anaheim Angels from 1987 to 2002, holding roles other than scout during that time as well. He scouted for the Los Angeles Dodgers (until 2006) and the Washington Nationals. He was pitching coach for the Palm Springs Angels in 1987, the Midland Angels in 1988 and the Ogden Raptors in 2004. He signed, among others, Jared Abruzzo, Chad Curtis, Alex Graman, Mark Harriger, Sergio Pedroza, Troy Percival, Tim Salmon, Aaron Seuss, Rick Taloa and Phil Wilson.
For ten years, he suffered from a very rare brain disorder that slowly caused his brain to shut down, causing him to be bedridden for over a year. Only 150 people in the United States suffer from it. An experimental cocktail of drugs cured the illness, after other treatments, like electroconvulsive therapy, failed.
