Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Justin Dunn was selected by the New York Mets with the 19th overall pick in the 2016 amateur draft out of Boston College. Three years earlier, in 2013, he had been drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers coming out of high school, but had not signed.

In his first professional season in 2016, he went 1-1, 1.50 in 11 games with the Brooklyn Cyclones of the New York-Penn League, logging 30 innings. He then spent 2017 with the St. Lucie Mets in the Florida State League, making 16 starts in 20 appearances, with a record of 5-6, 5.00. His peripheral numbers weren't that great either, with 101 hits and 48 walks allowed in 95 1/3 innings, against 75 strikeouts. He bounced back in 2018, however, as he was 2-3, 2.36 after his first 9 starts with St. Lucie to earn a promotion to the AA Binghamton Rumble Ponies. There, he went 6-5, 4.22 to finish the year at 8-8, 3.59 in 24 games and 135 1/3 innings. He also struck out 156 batters while walking 52.

On December 1, 2018, he was one of three prospects sent by the Mets to the Seattle Mariners to acquire 2B Robinson Cano and P Edwin Diaz; joining him were Gerson Bautista and Jarred Kelenic, another first-rounder, and two players with expensive contracts the M's were forced to take on in OF Jay Bruce and P Anthony Swarzak. He was named to the American League team for the 2019 Futures Game, alongside Kelenic. He went 9-5, 3.55 for the AA Arkansas Travelers that season, making 25 starts and pitching 131 2/3 innings. He was called up to Seattle when rosters expanded in September and made his debut on September 12th, giving up 2 runs in two-thirds of an inning in an abbreviated start against the Cincinnati Reds. He was sleted to only be the opener, but had a rough go of it, as he walked the bases loaded while allowing three stolen bases, allowed a sacrifice fly, walked the bases loaded again, allowed another sac fly, issued another walk, and was removed in favor of Zac Grotz.
