Pitcher Germán Márquez was signed by the Tampa Bay Rays as an amateur free agent before the 2012 season. The scout was Ronnie Blanco. He spent that year with the VSL Rays, going 0-2, 6.82 in 15 games, including 6 starts. In 2013, he moved to the Princeton Rays of the Appalachian League where hes record improved to 2-5, 4.05 in 12 starts. He gave up only 46 hits in 53 1/3 innings, but struggled with his control, with a 38/20 K/W ratio. In 2014, he moved up to the Bowling Green Hot Rods of the Midwest League. His record there was 5-7, 3.21, and he improved his K/W numbers significantly, to 95/29 in 98 innings. He was with the Charlotte Stone Crabs of the Florida State League in 2015. While his won/loss record was only 7-13, his ERA was a decent 3.56, he pitched a career-high 139 innings in 26 games and struck out 104 while keeping his walks at 29.

On January 28, 2016, he was included in a major league trade, joining reliever Jake McGee in heading to the Colorado Rockies, in return for OF Corey Dickerson and 3B Kevin Padlo. He was named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Year after going 9-6, 2.85 in 21 games for the Hartford Yard Goats of the AA Eastern League. He reached the majors that September, going 1-1, 5.23 in games with the Rockies. In 2017, he was added to the team's starting rotation in late April after starting the year in the minors and in his fourth start on May 10th, he pitched a gem. He held the Chicago Cubs hitless until Kris Bryant doubled to lead off the 7th and ended up giving up no runs on 3 hits in 8 innings while walking 1 and striking out 8. He was given credit for Colorado's 3-0 win and also collected his first major league hit, a two-run single in the 7th.

He hit his first career homer on July 11, 2018, off position player Daniel Descalso of the Arizona Diamondbacks. It came in a 19-2 beatdown of the D-Backs in which Descalso and C Alex Avila combined to pitch the final 4 2/3 innings. On September 26th, with the Rockies in the heat of a division race with the Dodgers, he struck out the first 8 Philadelphia Phillies batters he faced on his way to a 14-0 win. The 8 strikeouts tied the modern major league record shared by Jim Deshaies and Jacob deGrom, and he also reached 221 strikeouts on the season, erasing Ubaldo Jimenez's club record of 214 set in 2010. Pitcher Nick Pivetta broke the string of K's with a comebacker to the mound in the bottom of the 3rd. Marquez pitched 7 scoreless innings in the game. He started the one-game playoff against the Los Angeles Dodgers on October 1st, but lost that game after allowing a pair of two-run homers. Still, he finished the season with a record of 14-11, 3.77 and 230 Ks. He was also name the National League Pitcher of the Month for September in recognition of his 3-2 record, 2.35 ERA and especially his 57 Ks in 38 1/3 innings. He lost his only start of the postseason, in Game 3 of the Division Series against the Milwaukee Brewers on October 7th as he gave up 2 runs in 5 innings and Colorado was shut out, 6-0.

On April 6, 2019, the Rockies signed him to a five-year contract extension worth $43 million. On April 14th, he became the first major league pitcher to throw a complete game that season, as he tossed a one-hitter to defeat the San Francisco Giants, 4-0. It was also his first career shutout, and his first complete game as a professional, as he had never managed one in the minors either. He had a no-hitter until one out in the 8th, when Evan Longoria managed to line a single just past the reach of 3B Nolan Arenado.

On June 29, 2021, he pitched one of the greatest games ever at Coors Field, firing a one-hitter in shutting out the Pittsburgh Pirates, 8-0. He was only the fourth pitcher in the ballpark's history to limit opponents to one hit or less in a complete game, with Hideo Nomo having pitched a no-hitter; the other two members of that very exclusive club were Pat Rapp and Roy Oswalt. He actually had a no-hitter until the 9th, when rookie Ka'ai Tom hit a lead-off single, and he ended up facing only one batter over the minimum. He had given a preview of this performance only two weeks earlier, on June 17th, when he had held the Milwaukee Brewers to one hit over six innings before having to leave due to soreness in his back. He went 12-11, 4.40 in 32 starts that season, leading the National League with 3 complete games and logging 180 innings. He was an All-Star for the first and only time of his career.

Germán had another good season in 2022 even though his team's poor performance depressed his numbers. He pitched another 181 2/3 innings, finishing at 9-13, 4.95 in 31 starts. However, the next two seasons were basically lost ones, as he made a total of just 5 starts and pitched 24 innings after undergoing Tommy John surgery. He was back in good health in 2025, although once again pitching in front of a very bad team - and not pitching particularly well. On April 24th, he became the first pitcher in franchise history to record 1,000 strikeouts with the club, when he struck out 3 batters in a 7-4 loss to the Kansas City Royals in the first game of a doubleheader. It was a rare highlight for him, as after 5 starts, his record stood at 0-4, 9.30 for the worst team in the majors. He made 26 starts for Colorado and finished at 3-16, 6.70, giving up 168 hits in 126 1/3 innings, in addition to 48 walks, and striking out 83. Simply put, he was one of the worst pitchers of the majors that season.

Coming off a terrible year was not the best time for Germán to hit free agency, and he had to wait until spring training had started in 2026 to find a team. On February 14th, he agreed to a one-year deal with the San Diego Padres, who were betting he would return to past form while pitching in a much friendlier environment than Coors Field. The signing came a week after he had been named a member of the Venezuelan national team for the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
