Biographical Information[edit]

Colton Gordon pitched for the Israeli national team before reaching the majors.

Gordon was redshirted as a freshman at Florida. [1] Transferring to Hillsborough Community College, he was 7-4 with a 2.44 ERA in 2019. [2] He was 2-0 with a 2.35 ERA at Central Florida in 2020 before the season was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic. Returning in '21, he had a 5-2, 2.77 record.

The Houston Astros took him in the 8th round of the 2021 amateur draft; the scout was Charlie Gonzalez. [3] He bounced around in 2022, pitching for the FCL Astros Blue (0-1, 1 UER in 7 IP), FCL Astros Orange (3 R in 6 IP), Asheville Tourists (2-0, Sv, 2.66 in 4 G) and Fayetteville Woodpeckers (2.21 ERA in 5 G). He fanned 78 and walked 8 in 53 2/3 IP overall and had a .80 WHIP.

He then made Israel's roster for the 2023 World Baseball Classic. He got a tough call against defending semifinalist Puerto Rico. While José De León and his bullpen combined on the first perfect game in World Baseball Classic history, Gordon was roughed up. He started okay by retiring Francisco Lindor and Enrique Hernandez. He then ran into trouble as MJ Melendez walked, Emmanuel Rivera singled and Javier Báez hit a two-run double. Eddie Rosario doubled for a 3-0 lead and Gordon walked Nelson Velázquez before retiring Neftali Soto for the third out. When Martin Maldonado opened the 2nd inning with a hit, Brandon Gold relieved. The inherited run would score, leaving Gordon with a 36.00 ERA; only Kyle Molnar had a higher ERA for the team. [4]

That summer, he pitched for the Sugar Land Space Cowboys (3-2, 4.63 in 9 G) and Corpus Christi Hooks (4-5, Sv, 3.95 in 20 G). He struck out 151 in 128 1/3 innings between the two stops, leading Astros farmhands in Ks, three ahead of Trey Dombroski. He had a 8-2, 3.94 record for Sugar Land in 2024. He was third in the PCL in ERA (behind Ryan Gusto and AJ Blubaugh), tied for 10th in wins, allowed the lowest average (.238, .004 better than Gusto) and was 5th with 124 K (between Blubaugh and Davis Daniel). [5] He was 7th among Houston minor leaguers in strikeouts, between Ethan Pecko and Nic Swanson. Returning to Sugar Land to open 2025, he was even better at 4-0, 2.55 after 8 games with only 8 walks in 42 1/3 IP. He was then called up to The Show to replace the injured Hayden Wesneski.

He made his major league debut for Houston on May 14, 2025, as the starting pitcher against the Kansas City Royals. He struck out the first batter he faced, Jonathan India. He gave up 3 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks in 4 1/3 innings but ended up with a no-decision. In all, he made 14 starts in 20 appearances for the Astros, finishing at 6-4, 5.34 with 1 save. He gave up 103 hits, including 21 homers, in 86 innings, although his K/W ratio was good at 72/19.
