Season Highlights[edit]

Coming off one of the best seasons in franchise history, which saw them come within one game of playing in the World Series for the first time, the 2026 Seattle Mariners opened their season by setting a strange record: they did not hit a single in their first two games of the season. Playing against the Cleveland Guardians on Opening Day, March 26th, they collected six hits in a 6-4 loss - two doubles and four homers; unfortunately, all four long balls were solo shots. They then recorded their first win of the year the next day by a 5-1 score over those same Guardians. This time, they had just three hits: a triple by Leo Rivas, a three-run homer by Cole Young, and a two-run shot by Luke Raley. No team had done that since at least 1900, and only nine had done so over any two-game stretch during that span. That said, in spite of the lack of singles, the M's were leading the majors with six homers at that very early point.

They started the season alternating between wins and losses in equal parts, going 3-3 in March and 13-13 in April at a time when no one was playing particularly well in the AL West. Their .500 record at the end of April put them in second place, one game behind The Athletics. However, they began to lose more regularly in early May, with six losses in their first nine games and on May 10th, they had fallen to third, but still just 2 1/2 games out. They fell to four games below .500 on two occasions, before they got hot as the month was winding down. Starting on May 25th, they won their last six contests in the month, and then started June with two more to make it eighth straight wins. That surge put them in first place, and now they were the one building a gap with their pursuers, the Texas Rangers being 2 1/2 games back and the Athletics having fallen three behind, in part thanks to being swept in three games against Seattle during that span, with both rival teams playing below .500. It was power that was behind the surge, as the M's had hit 21 long balls in the eight wins, the most by any major league team in an eight-game stretch all season. This happened while Cal Raleigh, their offensive leader in 2025 but off to a rough start this year, hitting .161 in 41 games, was on the on the injured list, together with 3B Brendan Donovan, their biggest off-season acquisition. OFs Julio Rodríguez and Luke Raley were both off to strong starts to lead the offense, while the team's starting pitching had been solid, with their top four starters all posting an ERA of 3.77 or better.
