History, Comments, Contributions[edit]

Coming off an awful season in 2025 in which they lost 119 games, hopes were pretty low for the 2026 Colorado Rockies heading into the season. The scuttlebutt was that manager Warren Schaeffer had to be persuaded to accept the job when Bud Black had been fired after just 40 games of that dismal previous season, and that he was not much more enthusiastic about the "interim" tag being dropped from his name before this season, as few improvements were expected and no one was cueing at the door for a chance to manage the team.

After going 1-4 in five games in March, the Rockies surprised by being quite competitive in April, going 13-14 during the month. That brought some temporary hope that this season would be different, but May brought flashbacks of the previous year, as the Rockies sank in the standings, going 8-20. Even when playing decently in April they had never risen higher than fourth in the NL West, and on May 10th they fell back into a familiar last place, already 8 1/2 games back of first; by the time the month ended and after a streak of nine losses in ten games, that deficit had grown to 16 1/2 games. The team played a bit better in early June, and then on June 14th, they set a franchise record for runs in a single game with 23. They had scored 20 runs in a game on four previous occasions, but surprisingly the outburst did not come in their home ballpark of Coors Field, but in a temporary home used by the homeless Athletics, Las Vegas Ballpark in Las Vegas, NV. The home of the AAA Las Vegas Aviators hosted six games that season, in preparation for the Athletics eventually moving there, possibly in 2027, but it had trouble containing major league bats, as a number of hitting records were set during the six games played at the venue. In the 23-9 win, the Rockies blasted six home runs and collected 24 hits, with Hunter Goodman going 5 for 6 and Kyle Karros and Willi Castro both going 4 for 6. Goodman and Castro both hit two homers, and Castro collected a career-high 7 RBIs. Tomoyuki Sugano received credit for the win in spite of giving up 8 runs over 5 innings, while Eiberson Castellano received credit for a save in spite of the lopsided score by pitching three scoreless innings to finish things up in his major league debut.
