Biographical Information[edit]

Ron Gideon spent seven seasons playing in the minors in the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets farm systems. During that time, Gideon hit .250/.357/.436 while playing in 573 games and he reached AA in multiple seasons. He spent most of his time in 1989-1990 as a pitcher.

Gideon started his coaching career in 1990 as a player/coach for the Jackson Mets. He was a hitting coach for the St. Lucie Mets in 1991 and Binghamton Mets in 1992. Gideon spent the next decade plus managing in the Mets and Colorado Rockies minor league systems. He was the Colorado Rockies' Minor League Field Coordinator from 2006-2012. He pulled double duty for most of 2009 and 2010 as he simultaneously managed the Tulsa Drillers.

In 2013 the Colorado Rockies added a "development supervisor" position for each of its minor league affiliates. Gideon was tabbed for that role with the Tri-City Dust Devils in 2013, Tulsa Drillers in 2014, New Britain Rock Cats in 2015, and Hartford Yard Goats in 2016. According to the Rockies, "The Development Supervisor is a leadership role that is highly responsible for the oversight and implementation of the Colorado Rockies development philosophies and practices. The Development Supervisor will be a team-builder who will create synergy among staff members so that they may generate and evaluate best practices on a daily, weekly, monthly and season-long basis. The Development Supervisors will serve as leaders in communication, so that consistency and continuity of organizational philosophies, execution, standards and expectations exist from level to level. In addition, the Development Supervisors will creatively seek out solutions to issues and challenges, so that we establish a foundation of winning with a focus on the professional and personal development of our players. The Development Supervisor will travel with their respective club."[1] This was a new development at the time. Many organizations now have development coaches that assume some of these responsibilities.

In 2017, the Rockies promoted him to their major league coaching staff where he served in various roles through the years. In the first two years, Gideon was a major league coach with his primary duty being to work with Ian Desmond on his transition from the outfield to first base. From 2019 through 2025, he worked as the Rockies first base coach. In 2026, his title with the Rockies was assistant bench coach.

Gideon's son, Ronnie Gideon, was drafted by the Rockies in the 2013 amateur draft. He continued on to college and was a sophomore infielder on the Texas A&M University team playing in the 2015 CWS Super Regionals.
