Biographical Information[edit]

Infielder Cole Young was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the first round of the 2022 amateur draft, with the 21st overall pick out of a high school near Pittsburgh, PA. He was considered an outstanding pure hitter, and he gave up a commitment to go to Duke University in order to sign with the Mariners. He was a shortstop in high school, and was kept at the position after turning pro, although the Mariners also had him play some games at second base to increase his versatility.

In his first professional season in 2022, he appeared in 7 games for the ACL Mariners and another 10 for the Modesto Nuts of the California League, hitting a combined .367 with 14 RBIs. In 2023, he started off at Modesto, playing 78 games there, before being promoted to the Everett AquaSox of the Northwest League, where he appeared in another 48 games. His combined slash line in 126 games was .277/.399/.449 with 34 doubles, 11 homers, 92 runs and 62 RBIs. He was named a post-season All-Star in the California League and a Mariners organizational All-Star. In 2024 he spent a full season with the Arkansas Travelers of the AA Texas League, playing 124 games as one of the youngest players in the circuit. He was named to play in the 2024 Futures Game and hit .271/.369/.390 with 9 homers and 57 RBIs. He also stole 23 bases and stealing 22 the year before.

He started the 2025 season playing in AAA for the first time, with the Tacoma Rainiers of the Pacific Coast League. He was hitting .277 with 39 runs scored in 57 games when he was pulled out of a game on May 30th in the 4th and told by his manager, Tim Federowicz, that he had just been called up to Seattle. He told reporters that he was so excited that he hardly slept that night, and made his debut the next day, starting at second base against the Minnesota Twins. He went 1 for 4 in that game, but his first major league RBI was a key one, as it came in the bottom of the 11th inning with the score tied and pinch-runner Miles Mastrobuoni on third base with one out. He hit a grounder to 1B Ty France who tried to cut down Mastrobuoni at the plate, but the runner was called safe on a close play that required a video review for a 5-4 Mariners win.
