Team owner (and McDonalds restaurants founder) Ray Kroc died on January 14th, but the 1984 San Diego Padres went on to have the best season in team history, winning the AL West title for the first time and defeating the Chicago Cubs after falling behind 2-0 in the National League Championship Series. Their win in Game 2 of the 1984 World Series against the Detroit Tigers remains the only World Series game ever won by the Padres, as they fell 4-1, in the Fall Classic and were swept in their only other appearance, in 1998.
