Biographical Information[edit]

Jimmy Jones was signed as a 1st round pick in the 1982 amateur draft by the San Diego Padres and Scouting director Sandy Johnson. After working his way up through the minor leagues, Jones made his major league debut a memorable one in late 1986. Jones came within one pitch of throwing a perfect game - the only hit allowed was a third inning triple to opposing pitcher Bob Knepper. Jones pitched in the major leagues for eight seasons before finishing his playing career in 1995 with the Yomiuri Giants.

Jones was a pitching coach for the AZL Padres in 2009 and 2010, and San Antonio Missions in 2011. Jones had an auspicious start with the Missions. Under his leadership, the Missions pitching staff led all of Double-A in ERA (3.43) and ranked first in the Texas League in strikeouts (1,087), fewest walks allowed (387), fewest home runs surrendered (85), finished second in shutouts with 12, and had three 10-game winners for the first time since 2003. Jones continued with the Missions in 2012 before being promoted to the Padres big league staff in mid-May, 2012 to fill in for Darrel Akerfelds who was battling cancer. Jones returned to San Antonio in 2013-2018. During his Missions tenure, San Antonio led the league in ERA in four of the eight years. Jones moved to the Amarillo Sod Poodles in 2019 when Amarillo replaced San Antonio in the Texas League. He was scheduled to return to Amarillo in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19. Jones was pitching coach of the Fort Wayne TinCaps in 2021-2022 and assistant pitching coach of the El Paso Chihuahuas in 2023-2026.
