Biographical Information[edit]
Edwin Arroyo played for the Puerto Rican national team before making his major league debut in 2026.
The Seattle Mariners took him 48th overall in the 2021 amateur draft, a 2nd-round pick, one selection after Daylen Lile. He signed for a $1.6 million bonus; the scout was Rob Mummau. [1] At the time, he was listed as both a switch-hitter and switch-thrower. [2] He hit only .211/.337/.324 in his pro debut with the ACL Mariners then was at .250/.333/.304 for RA12 in the Puerto Rican League. He began 2022 well with the Modesto Nuts (.316/.385/.514, 76 R, 13 HR, 21 SB in 87 G) then was dealt with Noelvi Marté, Levi Stoudt and Andrew Moore to the Cincinnati Reds for Luis Castillo. He split the remainder of the year between the Daytona Tortugas (.227/.303/.381 in 27 G) and ACL Reds (0 for 6, 2 BB). For the year, he had 93 runs, 10 triples, 14 homers, 84 RBI and 27 steals in 33 tries. He tied David Calabrese for 2nd in the California League in triples (7), was second in average (.013 behind Deyvison De Los Santos), ranked 9th in OBP, trailed only Edgar Quero and Grant McCray in slugging and was 4th in OPS (between McCray and 4th in OPS (between McCray and Yunior Garcia). [3] Baseball America rated him the Reds' #3 prospect (after Elly De La Cruz and Marte, 65th in all of the minors), and MLB.com concurred (putting him #44 overall) while BaseballProspectus.com had him 4th in the Reds system (adding Cam Collier to the list) and 61st in the minors.
Arroyo was 4 for 27 with 9 walks for the 2022-2023 Indios de Mayagüez, splitting second with Brian Rey and Richie Palacios. He slipped in 2023, spent mostly with the Dayton Dragons (.248/.321/.427, 10 3B, 72 R, 28 SB) and doing well in four games with the Chattanooga Lookouts (.353/.400/.588). He tied Brady Allen for 4th in the Midwest League in runs, tied Yiddi Cappe and Nathan Martorella for 7th in doubles (26), led in triples and tied Jake Vogel for 7th in swipes. He was named the MWL All-Star shortstop, joining Martorella, Jace Jung and Tanner Schobel on the infield. [4] In the Reds chain, he was 7th in runs (between Matt Reynolds and Sal Stewart), 6th in doubles (28), 1st in triples (11) and tied Tyler Callihan for 4th in stolen bases. He was one triple shy of minor league leader Tyler Black. MLB.com still had him as the Reds' #3 prospect (behind Marte and Rhett Lowder) and #67 in all of baseball but Baseball America and BaseballProspectus dropped him off their lists.
His progress was stalled in 2024 when he injured his shoulder in spring training, requiring surgery. [5] He missed the entire minor league season. Returning to action after the season ended, he hit .253/.309/.333 for the Glendale Desert Dogs of the Arizona Fall League but scored 18 times in 18 games and was 7-for-7 in steal attempts. He tied for 8th in runs. With the 2025 Lookouts, he fielded .954 at short and batted .284/.345/.371. He was down to 4 triples and 12 steals; he was 8th in the Southern League with 63 runs. He had a solid winter for the Cangrejeros de Santurce, at .355/.429/.468 with a .969 fielding.
The Arecibo native was the youngest player for Puerto Rico in the 2026 World Baseball Classic, a week younger than Elmer Rodríguez. He backed up Willi Castro at second base, getting into two games. He pinch-ran for Emmanuel Rivera in their 4-3 win over Panama. In their 3-2 loss to Team Canada, he got the start at 2B, flying out against Jordan Balazovic and striking out versus Logan Allen before Darell Hernaiz replaced him. [6] He started the 2026 season with the AAA Louisville Bats, where he hit .323 in his first 53 games, with 11 homers and 34 RBIs. He was called up to Cincinnati on June 1st when SS Elly De La Cruz was placed on the injured list with a hamstring injury and he started that night's game against the Kansas City Royals at second base. He went 1 for 4 in a 9-2 loss, his first big league hit being a single off Eli Morgan in the 9th inning after striking out in his first three plate appearances.
