Biographical Information[edit]

Will Callihan was a starter for the USA junior national team that won Gold at the 2018 Pan American Championships held in Ciudad de Panamá. He was largely a second baseman in the minors, but in his major league debut, which came with the Cincinnati Reds in the first game of a doubleheader against the St. Louis Cardinals on April 30, 2025, he started in left field and went 0 for 2; he then came in as a defensive replacement at second base in the second game. The Reds had drafted him in the 3rd round of the 2019 amateur draft, out of high school. He had been doing well in the minors before his call-up, batting .303 with 4 homers and 12 RBIs in 24 games for the Louisville Bats. Barely one week after his debut, on May 5th, he broke his left forearm in the 3rd inning of a game against the Atlanta Braves. Matt Olson hit a ball down the left field line at Truist Park, on which Tyler attempted to make a sliding catch. Running at full speed, he got to the ball but crashed into the wall with his glove arm taking the worst of the blow. The ball popped to the ground as he was writhing in pain, and Olson circled the bases, being credited with an inside-the-park homer. Callihan had gone 1 for 6 in 4 games until the injury, which kept him out of action for the remainder of the season.

On March 4, 2026, he was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates in return for veteran reliever Kyle Nicolas. The Pirates looked at him as an infielder in spring training, before sending him back to minor league camp on March 21st.
