Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Kyle Nicolas was drafted by the Miami Marlins in the second round of the 2020 amateur draft, out of Ball State University. He never played in the majors for the Marlins, however, as after the 2021 season, he was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates as part of the trade for C Jacob Stallings. He reached the majors with the Pirates in the final weeks of the 2023 season, giving up 7 runs in 5 1/3 innings spread over 4 outings before the end of the year.
In 2024, he got an extended look at the major league level, appearing in 51 games, all in relief, and going 2-2, 3.95. He struck out 55 batters in 54 2/3 innings while giving up just 51 hits, although his walk rate was high with 31 free passes. In 2025, he split his season almost evenly between the AAA Indianapolis Indians and the Pirates, going 2-2, 3.79 with 5 saves in 30 games for the former, and 1-2, 4.74 in 31 games for the latter. He struck out 34 batters in 38 innings with Pittsburgh and his walk rate improved as his 18 walks represented 4.3 per 9 innings, down from 5.1 as a rookie.
He was a member of the Italian national team at the 2026 World Baseball Classic,, giving up 2 runs in 1 2/3 innings in 2 appearances for the Cinderella Italian team. Just before the tournament started, on March 4, 2026, he was traded to the Cincinnati Reds in return for IF/OF Tyler Callihan.
