Biographical Information[edit]

Infielder Sal Stewart was the 32nd overall pick in the 2022 amateur draft, being taken by the Cincinnati Reds with a compensation pick obtained because Nick Castellanos left as a free agent. He was coming out of Westminster Christian School located near Miami, FL and most famous for being the alma mater of Alex Rodriguez. He dropped a commitment to go to Vanderbilt University in order to sign with the Reds.

He began his pro career in 2022 with 8 games for the ACL Reds, going 7 for 24, then split the 2023 season between the Daytona Tortugas of the Florida State League and the Dayton Dragons of the Midwest League. His combined slash line was .275/.396/.416 and he hit 12 homers and drove in 71 runs in 117 games. He was named a FSL post-season All-Star as well as a low Class-A All-Star and a Reds organizational All-Star. In 2024, he played 80 games for Dayton but missed over two months of action from mid-July to late September, which likely kept him from being promoted to AA. He hit .279/.391/.454 with 8 homers and 46 RBIs. He was again named a post-season All-Star, this time in the Midwest League. He played both third and second base over his first three seasons in the Reds' system.

He started the 2025 season in AA with the Chattanooga Lookouts of the Southern League and was named to the National League team for the 2025 Futures Game. He hit .306 in 80 games for the Lookouts, which was the top batting average in the circuit at the time, then was promoted to the AAA Louisville Bats on July 18th. He hit .315 in 38 games for them and between the two stops had 20 homers (10 at each level) and 80 RBIs in 118 games. He was called up to Cincinnati on September 1st with the Reds making a push for the postseason. He made his major league debut that same day, starting at first base against the Toronto Blue Jays and going 1 for 3 with a run scored. His first month ended with a .255 average in 18 games, 5 homers and 8 RBIs, for an OPS+ of 122. He was on the Reds' roster for the 2025 Postseason and while they were swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Wild Card Series, he acquitted himself well, going 2 for 4 with a walk and a stolen base and driving in four runs.

He started the 2026 season with a bang as Cincinnati's starting first baseman, winning the National League Rookie of the Month Award for April. He hit 15 extra-base hits by the end of April, including 9 homers, and slugged .570 as the Reds got off to a strong start.
