Dinelson Lamet was signed by San Diego Padres scouts Randy Smith, Felix Feliz, Emenegildo Diaz and Jose Salado in 2014 and began his professional career that season with the DSL Padres. He was already 21 at the time, rather old for a player signed as an amateur out of the Dominican Republic, which may explain while he moved up directly to the Midwest League in 2015, going 5-8, 2.99 for the Fort Wayne TinCaps. he had an excellent season in 2016, pitching at three different levels and ending up in AAA. He started off with the Lake Elsinore Storm of the California League, where he went 7-1, 2.35 in 12 starts. In AA with the San Antonio Missions of the Texas League, he was 5-7, 3.39 in 14 starts, and he finished the year with a pair of starts with the El Paso Chihuahuas of the Pacific Coast League, losing both. Overall, he went 12-10, 3.00 in 28 starts, with 158 strikeouts in 150 innings.
He started the 2017 season back at El Paso, and was 3-2, 3.23 after 8 starts when he was called up to San Diego on May 25th. In his first start, he defeated the New York Mets, 4-3, allowing only 1 run in 5 innings and striking out 8 on a rainy evening in Queens, NY. The run came on a solo homer by Lucas Duda. He made 21 starts in his rookie season, going 7-8, 4.57 while pitching 114 1/3 innings. He was expected to be the team's number 2 starter in 2018, but experienced discomfort in his elbow after a spring training start on March 25th. He started the year on the disabled list, but it soon became apparent that he needed reconstructive elbow surgery, wiping out his entire season.
