Biographical Information[edit]

Daichi Osera was a first-round pick in the 2013 NPB draft and Rookie of the Year the next season.

Osera was 38-5 with a 1.07 ERA in the Fukuoka Big6 Baseball League and won a MVP. He pitched for the Japanese national team that won the 2012 Asian Championship, striking out 11 in 5 shutout innings. He teamed with Hayato Arakaki and Ryo Akiyoshi in a one-hitter of Pakistan. The Yakult Swallows, Hanshin Tigers and Hiroshima Carp all picked Osera for the first round of the 2013 NPB draft; the lottery went Hiroshima's way, and the scout was Kei Tamura. Only Yuki Matsui was picked by more teams that year.

The right-hander was 10-8 with a 4.05 ERA in 2014. He tied Minoru Iwata for 9th in the Central League with 116 strikeouts and tied for 8th in wins (even with Masanori Ishikawa, Yudai Ono and Toshiya Sugiuchi). He won the 2014 Central League Rookie of the Year Award handily, with 217 of 267 votes; Katsuki Matayoshi was second at 26. Osera was moved to the bullpen in 2015, and he notched 20 holds with a 3-8 record and a 3.13 ERA in 51 appearances. He was 9th in holds, 13 behind Logan Ondrusek and Shinobu Fukuhara. Osera's ERA was 3.32 with 4 holds in 17 appearances in 2016, and he relieved Jay Jackson in the 2016 Nippon Series Game 3. However, he surrendered a walk-off single to Shohei Ohtani, and Anthony Bass got the win over him. Osera pitched 1 1/3 shutout innings in Game 6, and the Fighters beat the Carp in 6 games. He was part of the designated pitcher pool for Japan in the 2017 World Baseball Classic but was not activated.

Osera returned to the rotation in 2017, and he went 10-2 with a 3.65 ERA. He was 9th in wins (tied with Joe Wieland and Haruhiro Hamaguchi) and 8th in ERA (between Kazuto Taguchi and David Buchanan). He improved to 15-7 with a 2.62 ERA in 2018, and he led the league in wins (tied with Tomoyuki Sugano), homers and winning percentage. He also ranked 3rd in ERA (between Katsuki Azuma and Onelki García) and 2nd in strikeouts (41 behind Sugano). In the 2018 NPB All-Star Games, he relieved Sugano in the 3rd inning of Game 2, and he completed a shutout inning with a strikeout against Shuta Tonosaki. Osera started against the Softbank Hawks in the opener of the 2018 Nippon Series, and he struck out 7 in 5 innings with 2 runs allowed in a no-decision duel with Kodai Senga; the game wound up going 12 innings. He surrendered 3 runs in 4 1/3 innings in Game 5, and the Hawks beat the Carp in 6 games. Osera won the Most Valuable Battery Award with Tsubasa Aizawa, and he gained 482 points in the CL MVP voting (2nd, behind Yoshihiro Maru's 1,314 points).

The Nagasaki native was 11-9 with a 3.53 ERA in 2019, and he led the league in completed games and hits allowed. He was selected into the 2019 NPB All-Star Game, but he allowed a 2-run homer Tomoya Mori in Game 1 and lost to the PL's Senga. Osera was 3rd in wins (tied with Kris Johnson, Yuya Yanagi and Sugano), 7th in ERA (between Koyo Aoyagi and Yanagi) and 5th in strikeouts (between Johnson and Yanagi). He was their opening day starter in 2020, and he crushed a homer against Yuki Kuniyoshi of the Chiba Lotte Marines. Yuki Nishi also blasted a homer, and it was the first time in NPB history that 2 pitchers hit a homer in the opening game. Osera ended up 5-4 with a 4.41 ERA that season, and he underwent right elbow surgery in September.

Osera returned in 2021 with a 10-5 record and a 3.07 ERA, and he ranked was 5th in wins (tied with Masashi Ito and Takumi Akiyama) and 5th in ERA (between Masato Morishita and Shinnosuke Ogasawara). He slumped to 8-9 with a 4.72 ERA in 2022, and he led the league in runs, shutouts and homers allowed. Osera went 6-11 with a 3.61 ERA in 2023, and he was 3rd in losses (tied with Yanagi and Hiroto Takahashi). He was the starter of the 2023 CLCS final stage Game 2, and he pitched 7 innings with only an unearned run allowed. The Hanshin Tigers still beat the Carp in 3 games.

The veteran came back in 2024, and he completed a no-hitter against the Chiba Lotte Marines on June 8. His ERA was 0.00 in the interleague play, and he was the first Carp pitcher to do so. He was selected into the 2024 NPB All-Star Game, and he pitched a shutout inning with a strikeout against Chusei Mannami in Game 2. Osera had a 1.86 ERA with a 6-6 record in 25 starts, and he was 4th in ERA (between Hiroto Saiki and Shosei Togo).

His repertoire consists of a fastball (peak time 95 mph), cutter, slider, curveball and change-up.
