From August 4-14, the 2017 Tampa Bay Rays scored only 10 runs in a ten-game stretch during which they went 2-8. They were shut out five times during the streak, which was the lowest-scoring ten-game stretch by any American League team since the introduction of the designated hitter in 1973. Prior to that rough patch, the Rays had clawed their way back into the postseason race, as they were 4 games above .500 and only 3 1/2 games out of first place in the AL East, but the brutal stretch had almost wiped out their playoff chances.
On September 11-13, the Rays had to move a home against the New York Yankees to Citi Field, home of the New York Mets, as Hurricane Irma was threatening to wreak devastation on Florida; ironically this move came only ten days after the Rays had offered up Tropicana Field to the Houston Astros, displaced by Hurricane Harvey.
