Established in 1937 in eastern Canada, the Cape Breton Colliery League held five teams in its first season. A class D league, it was separated geographically from the other minor leagues of the era. The Dominion Hawks folded on July 10, 1938, leaving the circuit with a more manageable four teams. In 1939 the league was elevated to class C status but it had ceased operations by 1940.
