Biographical Information[edit]
Tom Shafer has been a San Francisco Giants scout since 2021. Tom signed Hayden Birdsong for the Giants. Previously, he was an international crosschecker with the Houston Astros, signing Framber Valdez, Luis García, Cristian Javier, Yohan Ramirez, Nivaldo Rodriguez, Wilyer Abreu and Valente Bellozo. He began his scouting career in 1998 with the Chicago Cubs, signing Jason Szuminski.
Shafer has worked as a professional scout with the Cincinnati Reds and the Astros. He was also an international scout with the Seattle Mariners.
Shafer was a left-handed pitcher for Creighton University and Head Coach Jim Hendry where he was a teammate of future major leaguers Scott Servais, Dan Smith, Mike Heathcott, Scott Stahoviak, Dax Jones, Alan Benes and Kimera Bartee. In 1991, Creighton University finished in 3rd place at the NCAA College World Series in Omaha, NE.
