Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher TJ Shook was undrafted coming out of the University of South Carolina, a situation largely attributable to the COVID-19 pandemic, which limited the 2020 amateur draft to just five rounds. Under normal circumstances, he would almost certainly have been drafted, but he instead he had to settle for a minor league contract with the Milwaukee Brewers, which he signed on July 24, 2020, for a minimal bonus.
He began his professional career in 2021 when he appeared for three different teams, combining to go 5-2, 4.96 in 13 games, all as a starter. In 2022, he made it to AA after starting off with the Class A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, being promoted to the Biloxi Shuckers of the Southern League on May 17th. He made 21 starts in 24 outings between the two teams, going 6-3, 4.74 and striking out 118 batters in 114 innings. He then spent a full season with Biloxi in 2023, going 7-5, 4.62 as he made 12 starts in 25 appearances. He was back at Biloxi at the start of 2024, going 5-7, 4.90 in 17 games before being traded to the New York Mets on July 21st in return for Tyler Jay. He then finished the season with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies of the Eastern League, going 3-4, 3.90 while being used exclusively as a reliever in 13 games.
TJ was back at Binghamton to start the 2025 season, although he made a one-off start for the Syracuse Mets in early May, pitching three scoreless innings in his AAA debut. On May 10th, back at Binghamton, he took over for starter Jonah Tong, who had reached his pitch count limit in retiring all 20 batters from the Reading Fightin Phils in the second game of a doubleheader. He struck out the only batter he faced to complete the 6-0 win, which was also the first perfect game in the affiliated minors since 2017. He finished the season at 6-2, 2.41 with 8 saves in 36 games between the two teams. On December 10th, he was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the minor league portion of the 2025 Rule V Draft.
He began the 2026 season with the Albuquerque Isotopes of the Pacific Coast league, where he went 2-0, 2.86 with 7 saves in his first 22 games. On June 1st, he was called up to Colorado and made his debut the next day, pitching a scoreless inning of relief in an 8-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels.
