Biographical Information[edit]
Ryan Weiss pitched in the KBO and the CPBL before making his major league debut at age 29 in 2026.
Weiss was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 4th round of the 2018 Amateur Draft, and he was 0-1 with a 3.68 ERA for the Hillsboro Hops in 2018. He went 7-5 with a 3.44 ERA for the Kane County Cougars in 2019, but he slumped to 1-2 with a 5.97 ERA after advancing to the Visalia Rawhide. After the coronavirus shut down the minor leagues in 2020, Weiss went 2-2 with a 4.31 ERA for the Amarillo Sod Poodles in 2021. He reached AAA in the same season, but he went 4-1 with a 5.04 ERA for the Reno Aces.
The Diamondbacks added Weiss into their 40-man roster after the 2021 season, but he struggled in 2022. His ERA was 4.76 in 10 relief outings in Amarillo, and he recorded a 7.45 ERA in Reno. He was DFA'd on July 1, and the Kansas City Royals claimed him. Weiss was 2-2 with a 7.45 ERA in the rest of the season, and his ERA was 7.07 in 12 games in 2023. He was released in May, and he went to the High Point Rockers. Weiss went 5-3 with a 4.61 ERA there, then he went to Taiwan and had a 4-1 record with a 2.32 ERA for the Fubon Guardians of the Chinese Professional Baseball League. He was 3-4 with a 4.34 ERA for High Point in 2024 after which the Hanwha Eagles of the Korea Baseball Organization signed him. He made 16 starts with the eagles to finish the season, going 5-5, 3.73, then in 2025 had an excellent season for Hanwha, going 16-5, 2.87 in 30 starts, with 207 strikeouts in 178 2/3 innings.
Ryan's success in Korea led to renewed interest from major league clubs, and on December 2, 2025, he signed with the Houston Astros with the expectation that he would make his major league debut as a member of their starting rotation in 2026. He made the team out of spring training, but as a reliever. His debut came in Houston's second game of the season, against the Los Angeles Angels on March 27th; he pitched one inning in a 6-2 loss, giving two hits, one of them a solo homer by Zach Neto.
