Biographical Information[edit]

Cancel with the Spokane Indians, April 15, 2023

Robinson Cancel, whose first major league season was in 1999, made it back to the major leagues with the New York Mets in June 2008 for his most extensive look, 27 games. On August 11th that year, he hit his only home run, a solo shot off Pittsburgh Pirates lefty Zach Duke in the 6th inning of a 7-5 loss. Following the season, he played only three more games in the majors, one with the Mets in 2009 and two with the Houston Astros in 2011. In 45 career games, he was 20-for-100 (.200).

Cancel's minor league career stretched from 1994 through 2013. He played for the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League in 2010 and wrapped his pro career in the Mexican League, first with the Sultanes de Monterrey in 2012 and then with the Petroleros de Minatitlan in 2013.

Cancel became a manager with the GCL Braves in 2015 and Danville Braves in 2016. He moved to the Colorado Rockies' organization as coach of the Boise Hawks in 2017 before seizing the skipper's reins of the Asheville Tourists in 2018-2019. Cancel was slated to return to Asheville in 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic caused the minor league season to be cancelled. In his next two seasons (2021-2022) he was the manager of the Fresno Grizzlies in the California League, recording a 157-90 record (.635 winning percentage) and guiding the team to a pair of postseason appearances. During the 2024 season, Cancel led his Spokane Indians team to the best record in the Northwest League and the League championship. Cancel returned to Spokane in 2025.

Cancel also has winter league coaching and managerial experience. He served as a coach for the Tomateros de Culiacan of the Mexican Pacific League during the 2017/2018 season. The following year he replaced Lorenzo Bundy as team manager on November 3rd, but was himself fired the following January 6th. The following winter he replaced Jesus Feliciano as Indios de Mayaguez manager on November 21st. In this instance, Cancel finished the season as manager. Replacing managers is a popular technique in both the winter leagues and the summer league in Mexico and Latin America, as a way to try and change a team's performance, much more so than in MLB. Cancel was scheduled to manage the Tiburones de Aguadilla team in Puerto Rico's Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League in 2020/21. However, on December 2nd, he instead took over as manager of the Caneros de los Mochis in Mexico. He returned to that same team the next season, but was fired on November 12, 2021. Cancel continued coaching and managing in Mexico in subsequent years.
