Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Quinn Mathews was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 4th round of the 2023 amateur draft out of Stanford University. One year earlier, the Tampa Bay Rays had taken him in the 19th round of the 2022 amateur draft, but he did not sign. He spent four years at Stanford, including the 2020 season which was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic after he had made just 4 starts. In his final season, he went 10-4, 3.75 in 19 games. Stanford made it to the College World Series in his final three seasons, in 2021, 2022 and 2023.
He made his pro debut in 2024 and pitched at four levels. He started with 6 starts with the Palm Beach Cardinals of the Florida State League, then went 3-1, 2.68 in 7 games for the Peoria Chiefs of the Midwest League. His next promotion took him to the Springfield Cardinals of the AA Texas League, where he went 2-1, 2.41 in 9 starts. He then finished the year with 4 starts for the Memphis Redbirds of the International League. Thing did not go as well there, as his ERA was 6.48, but overall it was an excellent season as he went 8-5, 2.76 in 26 games, all starts. He also struck out a whopping 202 batters in 143 1/3 innings, not only leading the entire minor leagues, but becoming just the second pitcher after Brandon Pfaadt in 2022 to record 200 or more Ks in 13 years. He was named to play in the 2024 Futures Game, was named the Minor League Pitcher of the Year by Baseball America.
