Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Mason Montgomery was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 6th round of the 2021 amateur draft out of Texas Tech University. Three years earlier, he had been selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 39th round of the 2018 amateur draft after graduating from high school, but had declined their offer in order to go to college.

He reached the majors at the end of the 2024 season, pitching 9 games in relief with no decisions and an ERA of 1.86 in 9 2/3 innings. He had gone 7-4, 3.98 in 29 starts between the AA Montgomery Biscuits and AAA Durham Bulls that season, with 144 strikeouts in 124 1/3 innings. In 2025, he was moved to the bullpen full time, going 1-0, 2.00 in 9 games for Durham, while he was 1-3, 5.67 in 57 games for Tampa Bay. He pitched 46 innings and struck out 63 batters, while also recording one save. Following the season, on December 19th, he was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates alongside 2B Brandon Lowe and OF Jake Mangum in return for prospects Jake Melton and Anderson Brito.
