Biographical information

Catcher Keith Champion played in the St. Louis Cardinals organization from 1982 to 1984, hitting .214 in 143 games and never advancing past A ball. After his playing career, he was a coach for the Savannah Cardinals in 1985, Springfield Cardinals in 1986, and Arkansas Travelers in 1987. From 1988-1994 Champion managed in both the St. Louis Cardinals and San Diego Padres minor league systems.

Champion was an advance scout for the Chicago Cubs from 1995 to 1999, and a Special Assistant to the General Manager from 2000 to 2006. He moved to the Boston Red Sox organization in 2007 in the dual role of Special Assistant to the General Manager & Pro Scout. After two years with Boston he moved to the Pittsburgh Pirates with the same roles for the 2009 and 2010 squads. Champion spent 2011 as a Pirates Major League Scout.

The San Francisco Giants hired Champion in 2012 to work as a Major League Advance Scout. He stayed in this role through at least 2018. At some point before 2023, the Giants designated him as a Pro Scout, a role Champion retained through the 2025 season.

His brother, Kirk Champion, has worked in the Chicago White Sox organization as a pitching instructor.
