Biographical Information[edit]

Starting pitcher Josh Smith made his major league debut with the Cincinnati Reds in 2015. He was taken by the club in the 21st round of the 2010 amateur draft, a couple picks ahead of pitcher Kevin Shackelford. He was signed by scout Joe Katuska.

In his first professional season, he was 2-3 with a 2.14 ERA in 19 relief appearances, striking out 43 batters in 33 2/3 innings for the Billings Mustangs and Dayton Dragons. With Dayton again in 2011, he was 14-7 with a 2.97 ERA in 26 starts and 166 Ks in 142 1/3 innings after converting to starting pitching. He was 9-8 with a 3.80 ERA in 27 starts for the Bakersfield Blaze in 2012 and in 2013, he was 11-9 with a 3.26 ERA in 28 starts for the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. He began 2014 with the Triple-A Louisville Bats.

On July 4, 2015, he tied a Reds record with four hit batsmen in a 7-3 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. Jake Weimer had set the record, back in 1907.

In 2020, with the Miami Marlins, he was a teammate of the other Josh Smith; to minimize confusion, he was generally called "Josh A. Smith", while his namesake was "Josh D. Smith". He also played professionally at the same time as major leaguer Josh H. Smith and minor leaguers Josh D. Smith (born 1987), Josh Smith (b. 1988), Josh Smith (b. 1996), Joshua J. Smith (b. 1996) and Joshua Smith (birth year unknown).
