Biographical Information[edit]
Jordan Swagerty pitched in the St. Louis Cardinals system from 2010 to 2015, peaking at Double-A.
He was drafted twice. He was initially taken by the Colorado Rockies in the 44th round of the 2008 amateur draft, multiple picks after future All-Star C.J. Cron, but opted not to sign. He did ink a contract after being taken by the Cardinals in the 2nd round, 75th overall, of the 2010 amateur draft. He was taken between outfielder Jarrett Parker and pitcher Chad Bettis, and in the same round as defensive wizard Andrelton Simmons. He was signed by scout Aaron Krawiec.
Though he didn't play professionally during the regular season in 2010, he did earn a spot in the Arizona Fall League, posting a 3.60 ERA in 4 appearances for the Surprise Rafters. Baseball America rated him the organization's #9 prospect for 2011, between pitchers Seth Blair and Joe Kelly -- and he didn't disappoint. He split the year between the Quad City River Bandits (3-1, 1.50 ERA), Palm Beach Cardinals (2-2, 1.82 ERA) and Springfield Cardinals (0-0, 2.89 ERA), going 5-3 with a 1.83 ERA and 0.972 WHIP in 36 games (12 starts) between them. He was a MiLB.com Organization All-Star that year. For 2012, Baseball America ranked him the club's #10 prospect, between infielder Matt Adams and pitcher Trevor Rosenthal. However, he missed 2012 due to Tommy John surgery and never fully recovered. Nevertheless, Baseball America still rated him one of the organization's top-20 prospects for 2013 -- though that year, he was 0-1 with a 8.44 ERA and 1.969 WHIP in 9 games (2 starts) between the GCL Cardinals and Palm Beach. Elbow inflammation and issues with bone chips forced him to miss all of 2014, and when he returned in 2015, he went 3-1 but with a 12.38 ERA and 2.813 WHIP in 20 relief appearances for Springfield. In 16 innings, he allowed 24 hits, 21 walks, 12 wild pitches and 5 home runs. The Cardinals released him on July 16.
Overall, Swagerty went 8-5 with a 3.81 ERA in 65 games (14 starts). In 120 1/3 innings, he allowed 105 hits and 52 walks, while striking out 106 batters.
