He had his most at-bats with the 1958 Chicago Cubs, backing up third base and second base. Although Goryl also played shortstop at other times in his career, he got in no games at short in 1958 as Ernie Banks was the only player who appeared at the position for the Cubs that year, while winning the MVP Award.
During and after the years of his major league career, he played years in Triple A. He also managed eight seasons in the minors.
Following his playing days, Goryl served two stints as a Minnesota Twins coach, in 1968 and 1969 and again in 1979 and 1980. He then managed the club for 36 games in 1980 and 37 games to start the 1981 season. Later, he was a Cleveland Indians coach from 1982 to 1988 and again in 1997 and 1998. In 2008, he was an adviser in the player development department of the Indians.
